Reed Bunting – Emberiza schoeniclus

This little fellow is normally hard to come near as he flits between the reed beds. This one, however, was pretty tame and let me come as close as 3 metres as he was busy chirruping away near the visiting centre at Lake Hornborgasjön which we visited last week.

"The Reed Bunting, Emberiza schoeniclus, is a passerine bird in the bunting family Emberizidae, a group now separated by most modern authors from the finches, Fringillidae.

It breeds across Europe and much of temperate and northern Asia. Most birds migrate south in winter, but those in the milder south and west of the range are resident. It is common in reedbeds and also breeds in drier open areas such as moorland and cultivation.

The Reed Bunting is a medium sized bird, 13.5-15.5 cm long, with a small but sturdy seed-eater's bill. The male has a black head and throat, white neck collar and underparts, and a heavily streaked brown back. The female is much duller, with a streaked brown head, and is more streaked below.

The familiar, if somewhat monotonous, song of the cock is a repetitive zrip.

Its natural food consists of insects when feeding young, and otherwise seeds. The nest is in a bush or reed tussock. 4-7 eggs are laid, which show the hair-like markings characteristic of those of buntings. (From Wikipedia)

LAKE HORNBORGASJÖN is classified as a Ramsar site due to the following criteria:
• is home to 1 globally red-listed bird, more than 50 nationally red-listed species, including more than 10 birds and 5 plants
• it supports particular elements of biological diversity that are characteristic of the EU Boreal region
• it is a moulting site for large numbers of waterbirds
• it is visited by more than 20,000 waterbirds, including 16,000 coots, 10,000 ducks, 20,000 gulls, 10,000 cranes.
• it supports about 15% of the north-west European population of crane.

Hi Ulla,
You probably needed to get a bit closer than the 30 feet you state...in nature photography, it's all about getting close enough, on the inside of your lens focal length if possible..It's what separates the mediocre from the special..

Hi Ulla,

A very handsome bird in my favorite pose - singing. This is another one I have not seen. Lovely colors and details - you show off his plummage well.

Hi Ulla. I like this as the photo captures the beak open and can imagine the bird call it is making. Excellent colours and good notes about this Reed Bunting. TFS. Murray.
