[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) is found in Southern Sweden where it is fairly common and not as common as the Greater Spotted Woodpecker.

It feeds mostly on ants and can be seen at a wood ant’s nest pecking away at its inhabitants.
However, it also drums on hollow trees to search for beetle larvae and it often uses such trees as a nesting place if it is suitably placed.

I was attracted to the call of the Green Woodpecker and after about 100 meters I heard the eager calls of the young coming from a dead tree by a small lake.

Soon I was able to see this female that differs from the male by the lack of red in the black chin mark. She was busy feeding her young with ants that she probably carries under her tongue. As the nesting hole was on the lake side of the tree, I was unable to get a good POV and the light was against me. But you can see her feeding one of her chicks in the WORKSHOP.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 12 meters and is fairly heavily cropped. The image was sharpened after size reduction.

Very convincing shot of this pecker. In .dk they're quite rare, and always very hard to shoot. God job!

These guys are hard to catch...I chased one around the other day to no avail. great shot! Wonderful colors.

Hi Ivan,

I didn't know there was a green woodpecker! A wonderful pose showing us the whole bird. Wonderful colors and fine details. Did I send you our blue sky?

Jane

Hello Ivan,
This is a nice specie that I have never seen in real life but I don't think that I would except if I visit your part of the world :) I like this characteristic pose that you capture and this bright blue sky makes a fine BG. Thanks!
Claudine

Hello Ivan,
What a great shot! The woodpecker looks to be abseiling! I have tried on a number of occasions to catch a woodpecker in my garden but to no avail! Well done! Lovely sharp detail of the bird and its habitat!
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Excellent shot of this green woodpecker framed against the blue sky, Ivan.
The light is quite strong but you have captured it well despite your limited range of perspective.
TFS and regards.

Hello Ivan,
Beautiful photo of this Green Woodpecker. In my garden they are always very shy or sit on the ground between the grass. You made a very sharp photo in a good composition and BG.

Hi Ivan,
A good capture and a very good nice looking subject. POV wise excellent. A simple errata is a bit over sharpened. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan,
both this image and the workshop give a good idea of the green woodpecker. The tree has somewhat high contrast but overal this is fine documentation. The spotted chick is also very nice to see.

Hello Ivan

A very good shot of this green woodpecker. The colours and details are very good. The lighting is well handled and the blue sky makes a super back drop for the bird.Very good detail in the plumage,I am not familiar with this bird so thanks for posting it.
