Mute Swan – Cygnus olor

Not exactly a rare bird but I just happened to catch this one in the viewfinder while watching a Wood Sandpiper by the edge of a birdlake we’ve just visited on our trip up north. A couple of Mute Swans were peacefuly swimming a short distance away when this male came along and tried to seduce the female. However, he didn’t succeed as the couple rapidly flew off and left him there in all his glory!

This was captured from a hide at Lake Hornborga, a birdlake primarily known for the display of Cranes that gather there in their thousands every spring on their way up north. It was captured at a distance of about 12-15 metres (50 feet)away. I’ve cropped it slightly and sharpened it.

Hi Ulla

Great capture of the Mute Swan showing off with a great pose, pity it was all a waste as the lady flew away.
Nicely exposed whites, very good details and I like the touch of light on the eye and the beak.

Hi Ulla, I don't think I've ever seen a swan puffed up like this before. And it didn't attract the females eh? What does a guy need to do? The detail seen on this guy is fabulous, and you've positioned him perfectly in this crop and he's positioned his head and that great eye perfectly in this pose of his.

Thanks, John

Hello Ulla,

From the thumbnail, I thought he was covering his ears up in response to some loud noise! Obviously, he was embarrassed at being turned down by the females!

Good detailed shot and the white feathers are perfectly exposed!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Now Ulla, That's what i call a complete show off, absolutley matching a title to this "seducer" captured. The PoV is really nice and he seems to be quiet keen to get attention. I wonder what happened as a result of all this display!!!!!!Good use of natural light and contrasts.

TFS & Cheers

Hi Ulla - What the heck! Extraordinary!!
At first glance I thought it was two.
I've never spent anytime watching these as you must've. The pose seems very unique to me. Never seen anything like it..

Hi Ulla,

What a show this Swan is putting on. A priceless pose even if he didn't score with the lady. Great timing to get this shot. Wonderful colors and good sharp details.

Jane

Dear Ulla,
Certainly not a rare bird, but the pose you have captured is very rare and fantastic.- It looks beautiful.:)The swan looks like an elegant lady with an expansive hairdo, like those we see the in the courts of Kings and Queens . Excellent POV, razor sharp image with plenty of details. Beautiful lighting and spot on exposure.
Thanks for the share Ulla and I am adding it to my favourites,
Regards,
Smitha.

Hi Ulla,
Outstanding shot of this Swam indeed showing off its extravagant plumage. Fabulous pose and I like the way it tucks its head inside its plumage. Very neat and sharp image with perfect lighting and exposure. The rippled waters create a fine effect. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.
