The summer form (form prorsa)of the Map Butterfly (Araschnia levana)is mostly sooty black with an irregular white band along the wings and a few gingery brown markings.

This is the spring form (form levana) with a dominance of gingery brown. It is so-called in several European languages because the makings on the underside of the wings are reminiscent of a map. At a distance the spring form resembles the Small tortoiseshell butterfly but it is considerable smaller, about the same size as shown in the thumbnail.

This is a fairly recent invader to Sweden, the first ones being discovered in W. Scania some 15 years ago, presumed to have crossed over from Denmark. Now it is common in the whole of Scania and is spreading northwards in Sweden.

It is absent from Britain but is quite common in C. and N. Europe.

It occurs in two, sometimes three generations and seasonal dimorphism is caused by the amount of light the caterpillars receive during development. An intermediate form, porima, is not uncommon.

I took this a couple of days ago when we really started having spring sunshine and warmth. The choice of habitat is the ege of a wooded area near to water where there is a profusion of its larval host plant, nettle and it was just in such an area we found several individuals. However they do wander into other habitats, including gardens.

This image was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters. After slight cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened.

Making a cake are we? I saw the words spring form and immediately thought of a cake...ask Ulla but maybe you already know:-0
A fine specimen..I like when we can call them specimens and they are still live..as a child I had a friend who caught these and put them in a jar with chloroform...then he mounted them in glass cabinets...something struck a bad chord with me about that...ah well...very nice image Ivan!

Hallo Ivan
Time is rather limited at the moment, but I could not pass without leaving a few words of appreciation for your posting. This "Map Butterfly's" markings and patterns are very prominent and well seen. Although you mention it is the colours of spring it rather reminds me of autumn. The browns, orange and beige create a warm feeling. Pity of the tiny torned out part on the left side of the wing. I like the powdery effect on the wings. Lovely presentation.
Kind regards.
Anna

Hello Ivan,
Beautiful capture of the Map Butterfly.Excellent sharpness and details. Well saturated colours and the smooth blurred background helps the butterfly to stand out in the frame.
TFS,
Smitha.

This is good. I've learned something here today Ivan. I didn't know these butterflys could have different colouring based on the season. There is good colour and excellent detail seen on this butterfly, with very good depth of field to show off his full antennae, along with the wings and body. The crop is good, and he's placed perfectly in the frame.

Thanks, John

Hi Ivan

That lens of yours is cetainly a good all-rounder, producing great shots from mammal, through birds to butterflies.
Excellent sharpness and composition on a great OOF background.

Chris

Hi Ivan,
A lovely capture of this beautiful map butterfly. Excellent composition and sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

An expertly capture from a good dorsal POV in a fine diagonal composition Ivan, the sharply focused image provides great pattern and colouration details of this beautiful butterfly. A pity the left hind wing was slightly damaged... Thanks for sharing this fine macro scene with us.

Excellent capture of this Map Butterfly, Ivan. Do I assume rightly that this is your first butterfly picture of the season?
I am happy to know that you are finally rid of the cold weather.
The image is very sharp, crisp and colourful.
With hands as firm as yours, who needs a tripod?
Well done and TFS.
