Though the Green Hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) is the most widespread hairstreak in Sweden and Europe, it is nowhere abundant and occurs in restricted colonies. It occurs mostly in sheltered parts of heaths and the edges of woodlands where the larval host plant occurs.

The sharply contrasting bands of black and white round the eye has given rise to the Greek ‘Callophrys’, which means ‘beautiful eyebrow’. The species name ‘rubi’ refers to Rubus, the generic name for blackberry and raspberry, which are only two of the many larval host plants of the Green hairstreak. A more common host plant is Bilberry and other species of Vaccinium.

The males are very territorial and fly swiftly to drive intruders away from the favourite perch, often a green leaf, where it becomes camouflaged.

This is one of the few species European butterflies that have a true green colouring, while others have green nuances produced by combinations of yellow and black. The green colour is produced by the way the wing scales reflect the green parts of the spectrum. This means that in collections the green does not fade away. The upper side of the wings is dark brown, but is never shown at rest and gives the butterfly a dark appearance during flight.

The English name ‘hairstreak’ refers to the fine rows of dots found on the undersides of the wings of this and related species. In this species this row varies considerably from an almost complete absence to a well defined row of dots. See WORKSHOP for comparison. The Swedish name Grön Snabbvinge means ‘green fast wing’, ‘Snabbvinge’ being the Swedish way of naming hairstreaks as all hairstreaks have a fast flight that is difficult to follow.

This was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Your note throws ample light on this species of butterflies I have seen for the first time, Ivan.
The green colour on the outer wings is quite amazing and obviously helps immensely in camouflage among green leaves.
Fine sharpness and clarity in the image.
TFS and all the best.

Hello Ivan,
Striking picture of this beautiful little butterfly. Not easy to take a good picture of it.Excellent framing and very sharp view on the wonderful green underwings. I have already seen one a few days ago, but the picture isn't good enough for TN.
Thanks and have a nice weekend
Anne

Hi Ivan

Its interesting that your this species prefers blackberry and raspberry. Many of our hairsteaks prefer a particular species of Acacia and similarly are only locally numerous but widely distributed.
This is a green beauty and very well captured too.
Excellent POV, great sharpness and DOF.

Chris

Yes! It has that lovely green sheen to it Ivan...Almost a pastel shade of green with some glimmer to it... A fine specimen..and now looking again..I see a hint of blue as well..so blue green then it shall be...A good combination...it makes the perch overwhelmed! Wonderful.

Hi Ivan,

From the thumbnail I expected to find 3 or 4 leaves. How did you even spot this beautiful butterfly which is a new one to me? The shades of green are magnificent. Wonderful details on the butterfly. Background is superb.

Hi Ivan,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful butterfly with such lovely colours and details. Nice pose captured with perfect lighting and exposure. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello Ivan,
a very naturalistic and well composed report. These butterflies always seem to present one side exactly flat to the sun, making it hard to find a position with appropriate shadows, and hard to avoid overexposing their iridescent wings. I like the green in green simple and powerful composition with a nice placement of shadows. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Hi Ivan
