Leucorrhinia rubicunda - Northern White-faced Darter

This was taken late this afternoon as we went over to some excavated sandpits with a small pond in our vicinity. It is a good habitat for several species of dragonfly, one of them being this beautiful red Darter.

All Leucorrhinia species have a white face that makes them easy to recognise. It is similar to Leucorrhinia dubia but is larger and more robust. This is a male with large abdominal red spots. These are yellow in immature specimens and females. The pterostigmas on the wing are red on the male.

It is a species found only in Scandinavia and northern Europe as far as the Urals. In Sweden it is fairly common except in the mountains. In Sweden it flies from May-July.

This species tends to patrol along the edge of the water and settle on stones or on the ground to rest with their back to the sun. This one was captured from a distance of about 1 metre with the camera handheld. It has beern cropped slightly and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,
what a beautifully marked Dragonfly!
You've captured a superb shot of it.
A clear POV and a great composition.
Nice lighting too.
Sharp and crisp.

Well done!

Hello Ulla,

This is a very atractive darter with its red and black pattern. Lovely details, not only of its body but also, of its gossamer wings.
Nicely composed, giving plenty of space around it and with a diagonal position.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ulla,
Perhaps not the most attractive BG, but sometimes you must shoot them where you find them..The composition does have the grassy elements above the dragon to provide a break.
The dragon is nice & sharp with great detail, colors, DOF, and exposure.
Well done & TFS!
Howard

Your Northern White-faced Darter was lucky you didn't step on it, Ulla. So this is the start of a couple of hundred more dragonfly photos coming up now on TN?
Very good sharpness and colours - it is lovely to see

Hi Ulla,
Wonderful shot of this dragonfly enjoying the cool sand. Very neat and sharp image with nice colours and perfect illumination. Not the best BG but you show a great perspective and behaviour here. The top POV works well here and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

A nice picture with good composition and POV. Framing and composition are wonderful.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hello Ulla,

Very nice sharp picture of this beauiful dragonfly. Not the easiest background. Very good light and wonderful colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

A fine specimen photographed expertly in detail from a good vertical viewpoint Ulla, a little unfortunate the close proximity of the noisy BG disrupted the venation details of the wings a little, but sometimes you can not escape from such mishaps...
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Ulla superb capture of this beautiful darter. TFS. Regards,
Bahadır

Hi Ulla, this isn't the best background to catch this Darter, but sometimes you take what you can get. It still turned out very well, with very good sharp definition seen on the veins on those wings, and the rest of the body. Colour is very good, with great depth of field to give good overall clarity of the Darter.

Thanks, John

Hi Ulla

I'm continually surprised by the diversity of dragonflies in nyour part of the world, TN is great.
Another beauty and very well captured.
Good sharpness and diagonal composition.

Chris

Hello Ulla
I have not much time for internet here. I cant visit TN much. So, I see your great macro after midnight.
The species very beautiful. Your presentation also very beautiful with great POV, focus, coloration. thanks.
best wishes to you and Ivan from Cyprus

How did I miss this one...The darter is one of my favorites and the colours mixed with the grains of sand are a perfect backdrop. You do know how to look down well as I do. Many are "looker-uppers"...I get a dizzy problem doing so...but in the car it is OK...I feel almost as cheating when I take a good image from my car...and my feet. You would not believe how hard it is to drive a clutch shift with numbness in the feet...I must appear drunk:-) Great show Ulla and my apologies for missing it first off!
Bob

Hi Ulla, splendid dragonfly with fantastic colors, wonderful details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio
