Hairy Hawker - Brachytron pratense

As this dragonfly was resting against a rather busy background I tried to disturb it. But, even though I tickled its abdomen it wouldn’t move, so I went closer and found that it was busily munching away at a large Bee and didn’t bother about me at all! I got this close-up from less than ½ metre!! In the WORKSHOP you can see a full view of this beautiful Hawker among the Brambles.

This is a fairly common but elusive species that normally flies from the end of May to beg. July in Sweden. It is easily confused with other smaller Aeshna species but they fly later in the season.

The male can be recognised by the hairy thorax and the broad abdomen with pairs of blue elongated spots. The females of this species are duller, with brownish thorax and yellow abdomen spots. The larva usually develop in stagnant marshes or ponds and the adults often stay near reed beds where they fly slowly and are often seen resting on a reed.

Hola Ulla, vaya commida que se esta dando, buen momento y una buena aproximación. Un saludo

'Tis a cacophony of colour!!! Patterns of color and nature. Even in larger patterns you see very well...I would NOT have caught this and I pride myself in catching the not so obvious. Very nicely seen Ulla...and I am so happy to be your neighbor on this lovely Monday!

Hi Ulla,

I can't imagine being able to tickle a dragonfly! This is an amazing close-up with great details of the head, every hair, and the body. The poor bee looks huge! Wonderful colors and so many of them. I'm glad you posted the workshop - I really like seeing the whole dragonfly with the wonderful wings.

Oh wow Ulla, this is getting very close to the action. You have picked up incredible detail on this shot of the dragonfly with the bee, even the thorns on the brambles seem huge and the dragonfly seems positively hairy.

Thanks, John

Hi Ulla

It's really nice to browse through your gallery again! It's been a while...what can i say: work work :((

Anyway, it's great to see you get such beautiful subjects up there and also kind ones (like this one) who let you come so close to them :)
You were lucky to find one so "passionate" about its meal and let you close in so much, but you took the best of the conditions and came back with a splendid macro!
The details and colors are very sharp and nice, making all the markings on its body so well visible. Great job!
I also took some nice shots of the same species just before going to England...perhaps i will upload one in the near future :)

Bravo and TFS
Horia
