The Four-spotted Chaser - Libellula quadrimaculata

There are few flowers and hardly any butterflies due to the drought here in the south of Sweden, but we have plenty of lakes, ponds and streams and there are plenty of dragonflies! This one is the most common at the moment keeping vigilant guard of its territory and chasing away all intruders while often returning to its perch for a rest.

During a short trip up north this morning we stayed by the edge of a small lake and enjoyed the lovely morning and the stillness only disturbed by the sound of dragonfly wings fluttering.

The Four-spotted Chaser, known in North America as the Four-spotted Skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata) is a dragonfly of the family Libellulidae found throughout Europe, Asia, and North America.

During the morning we saw at least 10 species of Dragon- and Damselflies and I was pleased to capture a few of them, this being my favourite even though it is a common species!

If you want to know more about this Dragonfly there is detailed information on Wikipedia and other sites.

I captured this one from above, from a distance of about 1/2 metre, while balancing right at the edge of the lake. It has been cropped slightly and sharpened.

PS You may be puzzled about the colour of the background! This is brown water! Many of our lakes are rich in humus as they're surrounded by pine forests, bogs and wetlands.

Hi Ulla

Superb shot - electric detail and lighting!! Outstanding.

James

Hi Ulla,
a wonderful dragon and in excellent quality, I love it. I had the luck to see the same one last weekend. At the end I were inside the lake with my shoes and the trouser, but that doesn't matter when you can make a good shot and enjoy the moment - but not so after the shot - walking with wet feet, brrrrr!
Many greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Hello Ulla,
specific light, particular colours and specific background result in a peculiar presentation of the dragonfly.
The fine and delicate nuances are underlined by these particular 'factors'.
Differs from most other dragonly pictures by the 'atmosphere' which is very attractive!
Best wishes, Peter

This is a superb and unique capture, Ulla.
Really artistic presentation.

It's the design Ulla...The patterns within the design to be more precise...and my vision of your eyes notion of those patterns, none of which can compare to being there at the moment..Life is so much like being in the moment...my good Buddhist friend used to tell em that music is nothing until it is performed...live and heard..otherwise it is ink on paper or thoughts in neurons...but images are the only way we as photographers can communicate our perception...and it works...and it works well here for you...
Bob

Nice catch Ulla.
Great detail/DOF, color, and light with the subject well seen from this dark BG. I like your composition also.
I've made only one trip to the river this season with pitiful results.
I did see a dragonfly this morning exhibiting some interesting behavior. It circled my pond then repeatedly hit the same spot on the waters surface making a small splash..Did this about 10 times then took-off. Anyway :)
Well done!

Hi Ulla,
Really excellent shot, looks very beautifull on this dark background with light in her wings...perfect details and composition, well done

We are seeing a lot of Chasers from Europe these days, Ulla, and it is a Dragonfly with a personality, indeed.
Your picture of a Common Chaser is brilliant.
The shape of the dry leaf on which the Chaser is perched makes an equal contribution to making this image highly artistic and the plain dark BG complements the composition.
Thanks and regards.

hello Ulla,
I missed this most beautiful dragonfly-picture. Splendid light and marvellous colours. The dragonfly is represented pin-sharp and the whole image has an excellent composition. Un chef d'oeuvre!

Hi Ulla!

I like this picture mainly because of the high artistic aspect. The shape of the leaf is marvellous, the composition excellent. Moreover, the dark background highlights the Chaser very well and shows the rich details. I also appreciate the colour tones very much.

Kind regards

Markus
