Sand Pink - Dianthus arenarius ssp.arenarius

This is a rare and red-listed sub-species of Dianthus arenarius unique to Sweden. It is only found here in our vicinity and south along the Baltic coast.

The unusual shape of the deeply fringed white flowers makes it easy to identify. It is a sun-loving plant that grows in tufts up to 20 cm (8 inches) high on calcareous sandy steppes or dunes where the soil is disturbed by grazing. The lack of grazing animals has meant a build-up of humus-rich soil which is not beneficial for this species and thus it is very much in decline. In a few places on the sand dunes it still covers large areas. As you walk along the beach, especially at night, you can’t avoid smelling their lovely sweet scent.

This sub-species that is also called ‘Scania pink’ flowers around midsummer. The nominate species is found sparsely in Finland and across northern Europe from Germany to the Urals.

This was captured from a distance of ½ metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla, wonderful shot of this beautiful flower. TFS. Regards, Bahadır

Hello Ulla,
there are some very similar Dianthus flowers growing endemically on a hill near Vienna close to the Hungarian border, growing in May, early June: Dianthus lumnitzeri, spreading over rocks and barren grounds, and turning the whole place into a fairytale meadow by their lovely scent at mild weather.
Interesting to note how many xerothermic plants and animals our quite distant places seem to have in commmon.
Very nice, well describing presentation. Only the scent is missing yet.
Thank you!
My best regards,
Peter

Great macro shot of this endemic to Sweden Ulla. TFS. Regards,
