Amanda’s Blue – Polyommatus amandus

This is a common species in the southern half of Sweden. It is slightly larger than the Common Blue with a wingspan of 31-36 mm. It can be found on meadows, in flower-rich forest clearings and along the seashore where the food plants are Vicia cracca, Lathyrus pratensis and Medicago sativa. When fresh it is quite easy to identify the male by the ice blue silvery sheen on the wings which have black margins. The underside is ash-grey with small black spots and very pale orange spots on the hind wing. On the underside of the forewing it lacks the black spots near the base that are present in the Common Blue. The female is brown.

In Sweden it flies from mid-June to mid-August.

The flower in the picture is Alkanet or Common Bugloss Anchusa officinalis. This is a plant native to Europe that grows primarily in sandy or gravelly soil.

This was captured from a distance of ½ metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened. NeatImage on background. It was overcast at the time, hence the butterfly is resting with closed wings. I didn't see the little ant when I took the picture!

Hi Ulla,
What a nice close up.Vivid colors, simple BG,DOF,details and composition are wonderful.
Thanks for posting.

I wonder who Amanda was? I can see the blue in the butterfly as well as on the flora. The butterfly is perfectly focused and yet quite natural in appearance without being too technical...added your touch of a delicate nature in design it works very nicely...

Merhaba Ulla,
Bu ne güzel kare böyle. Çiçek böcek , kelebek ne ararsan var. Hepsinin ustaca harmanlanmasıyla enfes bir kompozisyon ortaya çıkmış. Başarılı bir çalışma. Eline sağlık.

Hello Ulla,
What a fantastic photo. The colours are amazing and sharpness and details excellent. Great POV and OOF BG. Very good composition.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Peter

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Ulla!

Very romantic title, but I think ant is thinking how to bite leg of butterfly :-) Nice scene and composition, very interesting note. It's like Gert's revenge - this years butterflies are in Sweden but not in Poland :-)

Hello Ulla,
WOW, simply oustanding work on this incredible image. Into my Favorites it goes, thank you Ulla.

I also happened to shoot another species of Blues yesterday afternoon, Ulla.
Every Saturday afternoon, my wife and I drop in at our son's place for the weekend and I immediately take the easy way out -- just strolling around the garden and looking for insects. Not much of butterflies, but a few dragonflies are always at hand by the artificial stream.
So I found a pair of those small blues with tails which they keep twisting about while resting. I will try to edit one today and post it.
I am always fascinated with blue flowers, so this Amanda's Blue resting on Alkanet just makes my day. I like the colours and the composition and also that ant taking the tally of your subjects in the picture to two :)!
TFS and regards,
Ram

bonjour ulla
splendide!!!
la nettetéest excellent sur le papillon et le BG est parfaitement flou pour mettre le sujet en evidence.
bravo.

Hallo Ulla
Due to the fact that I have been ill, I just could not give my comments to some of the lovely images that appeared and past me by on the gallery. Now I have such a lot of catching up to do so please pardon me for only saying……………………
Splendid image. It is indeed a feast to the eye and it did not go unnoticed. Great colour and clarity captured on both the butterfly and the purple of the flower. The fine hairs on the flower and stem is really spectacular. I like it a lot! Ok, I like the ant too, but the purple of the flower is my favourite.
Best regards
Anna
