Gymnosoma rotundatum on Coriander

I’m very fond of a herb called Coriander that is primarily used in Indian cookery where the ground seeds are often an ingredient in curries. The fresh leaves are also delicious to use in various dishes. I always have this herb handy in the garden in the summer and then keep the seeds for the winter. It is very easy to grow and easily seeds itself. I also like it because it attracts a lot of Hoverflies and other small insects.

The other day I found this little fly on it. I’ve never seen this before! It apparently belongs to the Tachinidae family, 7-9 mm and it is parasitic on adult Pentatomid bugs (shieldbugs). The female lays her eggs on the upper side of the Shield Bug underneath the wings. The larva then overwinters in the host and pupates in the ground in the spring.

I captured this from a distance of about ˝ metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened. NeatImage on background.

Hi Ulla . I see you have been left at home alone. This is a first class close up. The detail and sharp focusing is spot on. I do like the light on the little fly making the red body shine. A unusual plant but delicate looking against the grey coloured BG. well done TFS.

Hi Ulla,

A ladybug fly? This is a new one for me. The insect and the Coriander are beautiful. You do such an amazing job with that G7 - the clarity is just marvelous. Beautiful colors, details, background, and composition. I'm so glad you introduced this fly to us.

Jane

I think it may be one of the staples for many dishes I cook...especially when using a ready made Curry...I try to get one that includes coriander...Very nice and informative as well!

Hello Ulla
I have never seen anything like this before either..What a fantastic Insect and I can easily see how it got its name!!
Photographically this is perfect.
I buy my coriander from the supermarkets and whilst I grow many other herbs I have never thought of growing coriander...I shall be attempting to grow some next year!!
Many thanks for this doubly interesting post!!
All the Best
Paul

This picture really excites me , with it's sharp quality and fine tone balancing. The vertical framing suits well for the concept.
Feels music :)

Hello Ulla
This is great capture not only for Ladybird Fly, but also for white flowered plant. brownish BG supply a nice contrast. great work. Thanks for sharing. have a nice weekend
Ahmet

I never realised Coriander flowers could be that pretty to look at, Ulla. As you rightly pointed out, we Indians don't care much for this herb past adding its seeds and/or leaves in every curry because no curry is complete without it :-).
The fly you show sitting on one of the flowers once again inpels me to share a similar confrontation yesterday afternoon in the garden. I too was startled to look at a similar fly clinging to the striped yellow and green blade of grass you have seen frequently in some of my macro images in the past. The only difference is that its abdomen is white instead of brown as seen in your specimen. The insect was tiny and I could decipher its features through the lens only.

It is a brilliant hand-held picture with sharp focus on the subject and lovely contrasting colours.
You are also quite an adept at using NeatImage very effectively.
As for me, the limited free version of it gives me creeps when it erases all the details on the subject!
Best regards,
Ram

Hello Ulla,

Yes, I grow corriander. I have a little herb garden which I am slowly extending as I become more familiar with the herbs. I have parsley, thyme, chives and basil at the moment, along with the corriander.

I do like this shot. Bothe the herb and the insect are sharp and detailed. I thought the fly was a ladybird with her wings out on the thumbnail.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Excellent close up. I love the red and black that contrast with the flower. Excellent POV and DOF. This is the sort of photo I'd love hanging on my wall. There's so much color that it makes me feel alive. They are vibrant, and yet, still. Thanks so much for posting.

This is an unusual looking fly Ulla. Pretty flowers too.
What awful habits these flies have - quite gruesome!
But it is a lovely image, so sharp and colourful. Very artistically shown,
Well done
