White Stork – Ciconia ciconia

The Storks in our wetlands have been succesfully breeding again this year. On Monday morning I went past the farm where two of them have bred successfully and produced three young ones. I managed to get a few captures of two of them as above.

Yesterday morning I was quite shocked when I read in the local paper that the mother of these youngsters had been run over and killed by a car early yesterday morning. The father is now left alone to cope with his young (there are three of them!) and to provide them with food. Fortunately they are now fledglings and should be able to cope on their own very soon.

This was captured from a distance of about 12 metres with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

I've posted a capture of the mother that I took last year in the WORKSHOP.

Hi Ulla . A sad story lets hope the male can raise the young one alone. You have captured a good close up of the birds and the huge nest against the blue sky. A good picture for hand held. Keep us posted on their progress.
TFS.

Hallo Ulla,
Wonderful shot of these White Storks and their nest. Very neat and sharp image and the cloudy sky acts as a fine backdrop. Excellent POV and composition.
Regards Siggi

Hello Ulla,
In my surroundings is many nest of the storks. This year I've seen few nests without youngsters. I like to watch storks wspwcially when youngsters lern of flying.
regards, Pawel

Oh, that is indeed sad. Animals in the wild do not have an easy time of it... but at least they are wild. There were so many sad animal stories on our recent spring trip. At least you have a beautiful record of the family and I am glad that the babes have a good chance of making it.

Hi Ulla,

How sad! She was so beautiful. A lovely picture of the storks on their huge nest. This news has put a damper on my day - I hate hearing things like this. I still count to make sure the quail family with 21 children in still intact.

Hi Ulla

Very sad news, however, you are very lucky to have these birds - they do not make it as far as the UK. Great pose - I really like the highlight in the eys of one.

James

Hi Ulla, sad news, but at least they should fledge. Lovely clean shot, good details and a fine composition for hand held.... regards h

Dear Ulla,
Today the world is more sad... :((
excellent captures friend,
pov and beautiful focus,
greetings

I am angry with the motorist who ran the mother Stork over, Ulla.
I am also impressed with the fact that newspapers in your part of the world are concerned about such happenings. Goes to prove you really care for your wild life.
The picture of these two with their little ones is so very beautiful, but I am deeply saddened by the realization that one of them is now gone.
Warm regards,
Ram

What a capture in a sad moment. I can feel it through your lens....it seems the larger the bird, the harder it would be to simply go over it...but it is also good to hear that your paper is good enough to notify. Our papers would not sell if they included that. It shows how much concern locales have. Well recorded..
Bob

Hi Ulla
A splendid and fantastic shot of a pair of white stork in their nest with wonderful details, nice POV and framing. TFS my friend! Cheers,

Bayram

Hi Ulla, lovely couple on nest, great POV, splendid colors, very well done, ciao Silvio
PS I hope they survive, please tell us notice about it

Oh... This is soooo sad. This is the cycle of life and death, not much we can do about it... Road kills are a real problem everywhere... Every day, I see small creatures (groundhogs, squirrels, foxes, deer, skunks, raccoons, etc) killed by cars in my region... This is a beautiful capture of those elegant birds that we don't have here and a very nice tribute to this wonderful mom. Thanks,
Claudine

hello Ulla

care of the young ones, you did a very beautiful image
with the cloudy sky background, fine POV, DOF,

Sad,Ulla...
But that is bound to happen, isn't it?When man invades their territory, he feels he needs to leave his marks there as well, so other men can follow, so we build roads in the wilderness, as if the damage we're causing to the air is not enough!

Oh, Ulla, I felt so sad at your news.
I feel such compassion for these families when a parent is left to fend on its own. As you say, thank goodness they are fledgelings.

A superbly detailed shot and perfectly composed.

Do storks pair for life?
If so, even more tragic.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Dear Ulla,

Sometimes mans impact on nature can be cruel if not unforgivable at times, so it saddened me to read this about the death of this wonderful creature, hopefully as you say the fledglings should be able to cope, and grow up into two beautiful White Storks, please keep us posted as to there progress, t.f.s

Cheers Rick :)

Hello Ulla,
Definitely a big loss. Even more tragic if you hear it happened through a car...
A nice image though...
I like the blue sky and the whites in the birds...
Well done

Great capture Ulla, sorry to hear the mom was killed.
Very nice exposure, DOF, details, and POV of the two nesting parents.
Good comp that shows both birds & the nest so well.
Thanx for the WS of the mom, she was a beautiful bird..
Makes me sad alright :(
Howard

Hi Ulla,
sad story. Very nice, perfectly lighted, powerfully concentrated clear image. You have developed a close personal relationship to this family of storks. I feel with you.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter

Dear Ulla,
OIne feels bad enough just reading it from your notes.I can only imagine how you must be feeling having seen them and photographing them and reaching closer to them.
The workshop shot is a really good one with sharpness and clarity.
This one goes into my favourites for another reason however. I really like the dark clouds that act as a BG to the shot.I have seen quite a good number of these stork nest shots earlier in TN.But this one looks different with the dark clouds in the sky and therefore highlighting the storks quite well. The storks too have been captured in good sharpness.

Thanks for sharing this..

Regards
