Queen of Spain Fritillary- Issoria lathonia

This Fritillary is easy to recognise once you’ve seen the hindwings on the underside that are covered by several large and irregular silvery spots. It varies a lot in size with a wingspan of between 35-50 mm. It is mostly seen flying close to the ground with a fast and jerky flight. The habitats mostly frequented are dry meadows and woodland clearings where the host plants, Viola canina and Viola tricolor are found. In Sweden there are two generations, in May and in August when it is more frequent.

The Queen of Spain Fritillary occurs in the southern half of Sweden but is not common. It is also found in Europe, except for the U.K., and in North Africa. The Swedish name for this butterfly is ‘Storfläckig pärlemorfjäril’.

This was captured from a distance of 50 cm (20 inches) with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and the levels adjusted.

Hello Ulla,
How beautiful! Everything in this photo looks great. Sharpness, details, POV, composition, OOF BG and that all in superb light. Nothing to critize. Great class!

Peter

Hallo Ulla
You have brought out the best details of this butterfly with your fine camerawork. The white interrupted white lining alongside the edges of the wings are very impressive and very pleasant to look at. It is as if an artist has dipped his paintbrush in white paint and barely touched the sides of the wings. The patterns and markings are clearly seen and displays wonderfully against the blurred green background which also complements the colour of the butterfly. I also like the almost golden colour and velvetty texture of the butterfly's body very much. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful specimen. Best regards
Anna

Hello Ulla,
Behind my window only oaks have leaves others trees are naked and temperature is below zero a little. Looking at photo is doing warmer. Yours have so warm colours, beautiful blurred BG and tiny flowers. Very nice remembrance.

Hi Ulla,

Among the best photos of the day! high definition and light in the butterfly in foreground. The background is perfect. The use of the small details of the branch and the flower is precise and appropriate. Very good job. Congratulations!

Hi Ulla,

While I'm not particularly fond of those "common names", I gladly admit that this one is quite regal. Splendid catch!

Best regards,

Ishi

Hej Ulla,
this is a very fine close-up picture of this Fritillary, one I still miss in my archives.
The sharpness are very good and so are the DOF, the whole butterfly is on good focus and still standout well from the soft BG.
Well exposed with nice and natural colours.
Very good work.

Hi Ulla, again
Aaahh, what a bridge camera can do in the hands of a good photographer ... I find no fault in this picture. There is no grain at all. The rumor goes that bridge cameras should not have more than 10 Mpixels to avoid interference of the tightly packed sensor points, a source for picture noise. Your bridge camera would have just that. Great, Ulla.
Best regards
Dietrich
