Dipper (Cinclus cinclus, Swe Strömstare)

This little bird is one of my favourites. It is not a colourful but a very tough and brave little fellow. It’s a temporary guest in our small river during the winter. It doesn’t matter if it’s
-25 C, he is still diving and seeking feed in the bottom of the river. He quite shy and keep the distance to people but get close to him if are quiet and still. He has no webbed feet to swim with so his use the wings under the water instead.
It’s very difficult the get a decent shot of this little bird, he prefer the shadow side.
I borrowed my friend’s IS-lens for this shot and I got a quite nice one when he is sitting on an ice floe in middle of the stream.

Is this a good shot, IMHO?
Yes, indeed. I like very much this composition. Ice, water and a bird.
Does the note learn me something new?
Totally new. We have a similar bird here... but I forgot his name ;-(
Does this photographer take an active part in the growth of the site?
Maybe ;-)
What do I really feel by looking at this photograph?
He is a mixture of penguin and blackbird or Robin. An amazing bird... and you got him. Congratulations!
Does this photograph help me to progress?
Yes. I just have to shot a bird on ice.
Thank you very much, MOB&OF Gert.

Poor bird with its frozen feet ;-) Too many ice for me Gert ;-) But your subject seems to like it. Good, cold picture ;-)

Cool shot Gert (no pun intended). The combination of ice, water and the bird make an excellent composition. And you still managed to extract some fine plumage detail. Well done on this difficult subject in a difficult situation.

Very nice capture of this little creature. You did a wonderful job with the water and ice. Very nice work, Gert...

Hi Gert,
You did a superb job on this exposure! What a tough shot to get detail in a very dark bird, and also in the white ice. What a balancing act!
The light appears to have been cloudy or overcast enough as to not give to broad of an exposure range. I would say you stretched it as far as possible. Very well done my friend!
Scott

What a plump little fellow you have captured, Gert.

I suppose, to enter the water at these temperatures he will need some extra insulation.

Nicely captured, wonderful details, lighting, color, watery BG and eye contact.

Great job, thank you.

The shot I would put in the category of "pretty". You did very well to capture him like this with the ice. I like the composition and the way you got it's attention. Wel done.

Hi Gert,
I can see the water and hear it dabble, this shot is so clear and I can feel that it is cold - brrr. This bird is beautiful, good colour harmony in your shot, thanks

Hi, Gert.
I know this bird, but I don't have photos. I think you have succeeded very well here in composition. I like the diagonal ice line and front water a lot. Natural habitat. Bird looks a little bit afraid, looking at you and ready for flight. Good use of DOF. Nice.

A great scene from the land of ICE! ;-)
Very good sharpness, detail color and light Gert. I really like this composition with flowing water on both sides of the bird, and the ridge of ice running through the frame on the diagonal. Very well done my friend.
Thank you! (and stay warm please).

Hi Gert,
Very little time tonight. Well worth a big green smile.
Thanks for posting

Another great shot, what can I say it has all a good picture needs. Good subject, a beautiful setup, nice background blur, a diagonal composition, sharpness, colors and a good DOF. Numero Uno !!

Mario
