Today’s post is the little Dipper, one very tough little bird. He loves the winter, doesn’t matter if it is -20C, he is still diving in and looking for food in bottom of the river.
I have tried to get a decent in-flight of this bird for years and I have shot 3-400 hundred without success. But this one I’m very happy with, IMO the best photo I ever taken, consider the circumstance, I had been waiting for over 1 hour in the snow to get this shot.
I took this when he came out of the water, I was lucky to have the focus on the right place.
I hope you like him too.

I post a WS when my friend trying to get a shot the Dipper, you can see him on the rock to the left.

How sweet is the victory when you worked so hard for it!
Excelent shot, Gert, and unique. I don't think somebody posted this one before. (well I can't be sure of that, it's a big site with many photos).
Moreover, you did it at the your usal high technical and artistic standards.

Regards, Petru

Very nice in Flight Shot of this beautiful Bird.

Well caught Gert, this is an excellent capture for the 401th shot!! Very well done, I like the BG colors and texture in harmonize with bird. Congratulations didier.

Hi Gert,
wonderful moment - in flight - excellent.
It's pretty with the white parts.
I like it very much, thanks

Excellent shot! One of my favorite birds. We have dippers in North America too, only ours are duller, without the white breast. But the habits are the same. They are hard to photograph even when grounded, because they blend in so well with their background.

Hi,
Great macro, colours and details!

Wonderful photo, composition and technically wise! Thanks for sharing - Xplorator Radu

What is all that white stuff your friend is kneeling on in the WS Gert? White sand??? I can't imagine what it would be like to have all that SNOW!!! :)))
But BRAVO for your little Dipper, yes, you deserve a prize for this one. It's a wonderful capture, the little fellow finally let you catch him. Excellent result, your patience paid off. I am very happy for you,
Janice
(9am, overcast but I hope the clouds will burn off soon, +21C and NO white stuff!)

Congrats, Gert! This is a very, very difficult shot!! I know the Dipper but I have no good picture. Fantastic action shot. Very good sharpness, framing and POV. This is an excellent composition. Thanks for posting.

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gert, I have seen this bird taking flight only. I have not even considered trying to take a shot! CONGRATULATIONS!

GREAT CATCH! And tack sharp too, with the wings nicely motion-blurred and a nicely blurred rushing-water BG.

This shot kills the scale, 100 points well deserved.
Sorry I have but two ;-)

Gabi

An incredible reward for your efforts, Gert, and for us as well.

After your last post of this fellow, I wouldn't have thought he could look so graceful gliding through the air :-)

Congratulations and thank you!

The ws is a nice bonus.

Hat's off to you for the patience and dedication.

Hi Gert : )
I really admire your tenacity, waiting for hours in the freezing snow.
Your efforts definitely paid off. This is a fantastic shot.
A most interesting in-flight capture of this unusual bird in flight.
Congratulations, and TFS. : )

Hello Gert!
Wonderful in flight capture.Solid body,motion
blur on wings, clear eyes and details,POV,BG and
composition are excellent.TFS...:-)

Well captured Gert. Excellent timing to get this in-flight shot. Well done. TFS.

You've done well to get this incredibly difficult shot. I can't imagine waiting for an hour in the cold and snow, but I guess we have to shot when we get the chance. the head and upper body are perfectly sharp and the blurred wings and tail and background give that sence of movement that is so important IMO for an in-flight shot. Well done Gert, this is an excellent and perhaps unique shot.

This is an excellent capture my friend. Very good sharpness, detail and exposure..I'm amazed that you got this at 1/200th. You said you were lucky to have the focus in the right place..Isn't that the truth! Your persistance and a bit of luck produced an excellent result.
Very well done.

Great capture.. The bird's position in flight suggests that it is hovering in place. Was that the case? This is a very interesting shot. Well done Gert.

Hi Gert,
very good shot, nice a bird in flight. I like the DOF and colours. Well done.
Rgs, Aleksander

Excellent image Gert! The details show nicely in this well captured dipper, the DOF really brings out the subject. Well done. :)

Wonderful in-flight capture Gert!
You did great with the focus and everything. Also a very nice background.
I know exactly what you're talking about! I've also waited to take my gray owl in-flight photos too (see my last post) !
Very well done, thank you!

A very nice shot of a beautifull bird. TFS

Gr Cris
