I took this the spring when the starling just had arrived. They are welcome as a sign of spring.
This one was looking for some nest material. I took this hand held with a support from a small tree and with my elbows and knees, the build-in SSS helps allot since the shutter speed was very long 1/80 sec for a 500mm. I think the starling is beautiful and exotic looking bird but I also know a lot of people think it is a pest.

Starlings have mainly black bodies and yellow bills like Blackbirds but they are smaller and fatter with more pointed heads and longer, more pointed wings. Their plumage is always speckled although in summer the markings on the breast are replaced by iridescent tones of green and blue. Juveniles start off as plain brown with a black bill and characteristic shape.

Hej Gert,
Superb shot of a starling that has just acquired its breeding plumage shown in shiny freshness in this sharp capture. Excellent BG lighting and composition, altogether making this a high quality post.

Hi Gert,
I wonder how you made the shot from this low POV. It's fantastic to see it with the eyes of a mouse! The colours and the sharpness is excellent, very very well done, thanks

Hi Gert

A great shot of this starling - you have captured the colours very well. In my opinion, they are very underrated and yheir recent decline is a great shame.

James

I'd love to capture a shot of one this well myself.
Excellent focus detail and lighting.

Hi Gert

Looks like you've been crawling in the dirt for this amazing low POV. An excellent capture at eye level of this stunning bird. Although there are clear differences, but this bird reminds me much of our Arrow-marked babbler - Turdoides jardineii that is similarly marked with those pointed down arrows all over its body.

The composition is perfect with great space in front of the bird and the eye nicely placed on the 1/3 vertical axis. The colours are dazzling and the details are superb. Even at this low plane you managed to get an isolated BG that is well OOF. The lighting on the bird is remarkable showing great contrasts in the darkish plumage.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Great close up shot opf this Starling Gert.
I
d never really seen the greenish feathers around the neck and shoulders before.
Excellent work.

bonjour Gert

quelle belle photo et quelle piqué du tonerre !!
c'est uen SUPERBE IMAGE

mais juste une seule chose, personnellement j'aurais préféré
que l'étourneau soit plus petit dans l'image et en avant de lui
on voit un plus de son environnement
