[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today's post is a Red amiral (vanessa atalanta).
It's a very bad year for butterflies here in Sweden so I can say I was very happy when I found this one today.

some info:
A very widespread species. It has trouble surviving the winter in the UK (although some do) and so the population is boosted by migrants from mainland Europe. It is indeed a strong migrant, it has been recorded flying at night and also in sub zero temperatures. It certainly deserves its swift footed scientific name.

Technique:
Sigma 180 mm Macro EX HSM, Sigma 500 EF for fill-in.
ISO 200 Raw-format, manual exposure, manual focus
Converted , contrast and levels ,crop, resized, USM.
I used Adobe Photoshop CS2 for pp.

Hi Gert

Wow... two in one shot! Now I am impressed!! Not only have you captured the exquiste b'fly, but you have also got a fly on the flower. The colours are lovely and bright. The b'fly wing is sensational! What an array of colour. A truly wonderful find. Thanks Gert for another incredible image.

Hi Gert!
amazing butterfly! I've never saw it!

Superb capture Gert, the butterfly and the fly. I am amazed at the different colours in the Red Admiral, colours that don't even go together, it looks like an artists pallette with all the colours blurring in together. NIce and sharp, excellent catch, well done.

Superb photo. This beautiful species flies here in Washington State (USA) also.

Great shot Gert! Glad to see you're getting some b-fly shots considering it's a bad year for them where you live..Very good, colors, DOF, exposure and composition. Sharp details with an excellent POV. Well done my friend!

Hi Gert

Hi steve - good macro of a red admiral. Beautifull colors, good DOF and we can see many details. Well done !

Double the macro.
Excellent shot and well done on the composition and details. It's a beauty with a fly watching on.
Excellent work, Gert.

Hi Gert, lovely shot of a Red Admiral. I'd under-expose a little more for those small splashes of white and the mouth area. I have to say that I'm finding butterfly shots more of a challenge with my SLR than with my old fuji so I appreciate the the quality of this shot. Fantastic sharpness, DOF and BG. Lovely :)

Hello Gert. Very colorful butterfly, even in its underwings. Interesting and unusual profile POV. Details on the whole picture, including butterfly, flowers, and fly... are tack sharp. Wonderful colors... I especially like that pink on the flower (and I am not a pink person!). Lovely shot. TFS. : )

Wow Gert, you are a master. The focus, DOF, composition and BG are all perfect. The colours are wonderfull. I hope I can take pictures like these one day. Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.

I was not happy last days Gert, the butterflies are gone for the moment, just a few let them see. The dragonflies, are flying and flying and don't have a stop. So I must wait. Your shot is nice, Ofcoarse would I say, with your experience, I accept only good photo's from your hand. Otherwise you don't put them here on the site. Very good pov, good details and a nice composing shot, very good job my friend.

Hello Gert,

Well, Gert, I hope your vision is ok to appreciate the magnificent colors of your Red Admiral. It is a beautifull butterfly. I wish I can 'capture' one one day.
The rain is rare here. Maybe that has an effect on butterflies population.
A great 'job', skillful friend!
Have a good weekend!
