I was out in our City park today to see if any spring birds had arrived but instead of any new birds I found this cute fellow. He is like a machine when he is peeling the cone, the shells really flying. The red squirrel is a common animal up here but not so common as it was when
I was a kid. In the park you can see them amost every day.
I using my long zoom at 500mm handheld and I’m happy for the built in IS (SSS).
It was a beautiful late winter/ spring day , sunny with blue sky and quite warm for the season,+15C.

Hi Gert.
I do not know what I love more: DOF or SSS. However, I know precisely, without SSS I would not have necessary DOF (and exposure time). I am glad, that you have estimated at SSS true worth. The results are impress the imagination.

Really great shot by pictured scene and quality of its reproduction My congratulations and TFS.
Alexei.

Hi Gert,
Excellent capture, love the feeding action I see..
Color, exposure, DOF, BG, sharpness, catchlight, all very nice mf.
Very well done.

Hello Gert,
best part of the picture is of course the sharp and well presented squirrel. But what is nice is the moving piece of cone, which gives action to the otherwise rather static image. Real nice, and frankly, it is hard to give any remarks except but compliments.
Well done. Jacob

Hej Gert,
Super capture of a Red Squirrel hard at work with a cone, with a nice touch of the flying cone scale in action. First class image with high degree of sharpness and excellent bokeh BG set in a fine composition.

Hi Gert
An action shot! Look at this little squirrel go. He has given you a nice pose with his tail wrapped tightly against his body. The sun shining on his fur makes him look nice and healthy. He is so cute.

Hej Gert,
Terrific shot of this little Squirrel eating a cone with intense concentration. Excellent light which brings out the wondeful colour of the fur and details are razor sharp. Well done!
I'm afraid many have been killed on the roads -we used to have lots of them in the outskirts of Stockholm where I grew up but now they're scarce there.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

A gem.
I like the side view with an overall sharpness.
Except for the falling foodstuff; and the latter is wonderful.
Well perched as well. And top of the bill: awesome bokeh; just love that background.

Oh Gert what a beautiful animal. I love the red fur and the pose - as I always think of squirrels like this peeling the nut. Great action shot too with teh nut being torn apart.

Olá Gert

Fantástica esta imagem do "lindo esquilo".
Uma foto interessante, nítida, boa textura e cores ótimas.
Parabéns!

Hi Gert,
The quality light here was amazing. The exposure is spot on. The colors and tack sharp detail in the fur look excellent. Well composed and framed shot. The cutness factor is very high.
Nice shot my friend!
Scott

Hi Gert, this is an amazing shot, catching "the machine" in action with the shells flying off. Your composition, colour and detail are excellent. He can obviously see you, but appears to be a little preoccupied at the moment. I guess too at 500mm he doesn't consider you much of a threat.

Thanks, John

Hi Gert,
Super sharp capture. Handheld at 500mm! My my you must have a steady hand even with IS. Technically hard to fault...your camera work is top notch. Love the composition and the almost graphic rendition of the squirel with that tail wrapped hard up against his/her body. Well timed with the bits and pieces of cone flying around.
Cheers
Paul

Hi Gert

Just like i told Howard...this was a week filled with (G)old members ;) (first Adrian, then Thor, Howard and you...what a superb combination).

This is a wonderful photo of this cute little red squirrel.
The speed they devour those cone is indeed amazing and it's really perfectly captured here.
The details on the squirrel are razor-sharp and the colors everywhere are lovely and very well saturated.
The side POV is terrific and the DOF is impeccable.
A brilliant composition and capture!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: Congratulations for this amazing handheld job. At 500mm and only at 1/250...wow...your arms seems totally fine now, huh?

Wow a superb catch been years since I seen a red squirrel a very well composed and sharp detailed close shot one to be proud of lovely background also excellent side profile POV well done tfs rgds Necip.

Superb image Gert
Execllent composition, sharpness, everything is great. The 500 has worked really well here.
Great result
Well done

Gello Gert,

Wow! What an amazing Red Squirrel!!! The european one looks a lot more colorful and reddish than ours (the american one)... Are they from the same species? Our is "Tamasciurus hudsonicus"...

The nice bg lovely enhances the animal and you got a perfect pov! Details in the fur are awesome too!

Great picture and TFS,

Hi Gert,
Great shot. The action is amazing and the details and colors, as always, perfect.
TFS!!!!

Outstanding presentation Gert. And what a moment to have a shellpiece flying away from that busy busy ekorre!

I am fascinated that it is called an "ekorre". I believe that in Dutch this one is called "eekhorn", and I believe the "eek" means oak. We see the same word as "acorns"... but then it is the fruit of the oak! Who knows abt language and the morphing within. Tfs, Jay

PS What exactly is "Smart Sharpen"?

Just beautiful. All perfect (colors sharpness, action, composition)

Hello Gert,

This is another smashing shot from you! It seems this little guy was pretty busy and didn't mind you too much!
A real TN picture since it is suited for both artistic and presentational purposes! The excellent composition is enhanced by the profile pose of the squirrel and the flying cone pieces just add more dynamism to your shot. The pose and staging is so good that even if it was a black silhouette against that dreamy background I could tell what was going on. This is what's making the composition outstanding! Very well done here!
You also proved very good camera skills. The way you controlled the light is outstanding! The perfect exposure rendered beautiful colors and incredible details! Yes, they're incredibly sharp for a handheld shot taken at 500 mm! Even with the IS on the shutter speed was way too slow for that focal length, given the size of the Sony Alpha sensor! But you nailed it properly! The notes are useful and provide key informations about your photo! Congratulations and TFS!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Hi Gert, great shot of this lovely little busy squirrel. Wonderful colour tones and sharpness. You have caught good light on his fur. I am sorry to hear that these Red Squirrels are not so many. In the south of the UK we have lost them completely due to the Grey Squirrel. They are so pretty. Great composition.

Hi Gert

Sorry, but I did not forget my promise. I am just terribly slow in catching up and deeply in debt with my dues.

WOW...WOW...WOW

Nothing beats natural light (comparing this with my "flashed" dove as example) for crispness in colours and spectacular exposure. This is just a perfect shot in all technical aspects while it also posses the "+" factor as far cuteness and visual impact are concerned. This little guy is going nuts.

A brilliant composition with lovely full-on side POV. As mentioned, the colours are simply stunning and the details are "almost" unreal (but so it is with most of your postings). The BG is fabulous, well removed, totally OOF, and brilliantly enhancing the subject. Great exposure control ensured spot-on lighting throughout the entire photo and a lovely little catch-light in the eye.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

hi Gert, wonderful shot , strong coloures and nice POV, full of action.
