Today's post is a small but tough bird , the dipper.
It’s a temporary guest in our small river during the winter, they are staying here for about 5 months. They will return too the mountain in the north part of out country in the end of March, so they will soon be gone. It’s one my fav’s, this little tough guy.
It doesn’t matter if it is -25C, they are still looking for food in the bottom of the river.
An old man told me why they are so white in the breast, it reflecting the light when they are in the dark water.
I dedicate this picture to myself because I been a old man today;-( , 57yo and need some consolation ;-))
I used a monopod for this and together with the IS I got a decent picture at 1/10sec.

I hope you like my little friend too.

Hi Gert,
wonderful capture. Not only captured the bird so beautifully you also did a perfect job with the water, using a slower shutter speed. The colors and sharpness are just wonderful. Great composition.

Hej Gert,

Grattis på födelsedagen,
You took a nice shot of the dipper,I haven't spotted him this year in Nynäshamn, but maybe next season.

You really see the effects of the shutterspeed and suppose that the dipper is not that active as eg the blue tit, anyway like the picture a lot.

Paul

happy birthday, gert! :-)
and a great dipper-photo for the celebration.
the slow shutter speed lets the water flow
so nicely over the stones.
terrific job & have a wonderful day,
thor.

Hello Gert,
Happy birthday!
What a beautiful and lovely bird! Sharpness, POV, colors and composition are perfect. Well done. Congratulations...

Happy Birthday, Gert!
So you are 57 years YOUNG today. : ) Congratulations!
Interesting bird you have here. He looks very unperturbed and unflappable. I guess tough goes a long way. : )
I like the composition. Your little dipper has found himself a shallow spot where he can get a good foothold, and the river is flowing by all around him. Yet he holds his ground with his eyes fixed ahead, and he looks very calm and centered. Maybe he is trying to teach us a life lesson?
Thanks for sharing this beautiful capture, my friend. : )
Enjoy your special day!

Hello Gert!

Nice clean and well exposed. But best of all is the simplicity and the quietness we feel. Long exposure creates a nice blur in water.

Great shot and TFS.

Hello Old Man.
Remember Gert, one is only as old as you feel, so imagine feeling like 18 again. Let me refresh your memory (if 18 is too long ago to remember) by means of the words in the Bob Seger song - "Like a rock" (and I dedicate this to you).

Stood there boldly sweating in the sun.
Felt like a million, felt like number one.
The height of summer I'd never felt that strong.
Like a rock.

I was eighteen, didn't have a care.
Working for peanuts; not a dime to spare.
But I was lean and solid everywhere.
Like a rock.

My hands were steady; my eyes were clear and bright.
My walk had purpose; my steps were quick and light.
And I held firmly to what I felt was right.
Like a rock.

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be.
Like a rock, nothing ever got to me.
Like a rock, I was something to see.
Like a rock.

And I stood arrow straight, unencumbered by the weight.
Of all these hustlers and their schemes.
I stood proud; I stood tall, high above it all.
I still believed in my dreams.

Twenty years now, where did they go?
Twenty years now, I don't know.
I sit and I wonder sometimes, where they've gone.

And sometimes late at night, when I'm bathed in the fire light.
The moon comes calling a ghostly white, and I recall.
I recall...

Like a rock, standing arrow straight.
Like a rock, charging from the gate.
Like a rock, carrying the weight.
Like a rock.

Like a rock, the sun upon my skin.
Like a rock, hard against the wind.
Like a rock, I see myself again.
Like a rock.

Enjoy your birthday my friend and stand tall, like a rock.

Regards
Loot

PS. Almost I forgot. The little dipper is beautiful, never seen one before. The photo is excellent; composition, colours, DOF, the flowing river, and the exposure with the slow shutter speed. Impeccable work. TFS.

Hello Gert,
Happy birthday to you!
This is very nice capture.
The long exposure has given a very nice effect to the fast flowing water.
The bird is nice and sharp and must have remained very still.
A great shot.

Have a good evening.

Great shot Gert!

This is a lovely picture Gert. The water is streaming pretty fast and the rocks must be slippery, so the bird must have steady feet. :) Good, sharp details and wonderful composition. Well done & TFS!

When I first saw this little beauty standing here in the water these words came to mind:
"The Old Man of the Sea!"

And then I read your notes and see that you need a bit of consolation. So Happy Birthday Gert, and I shall add this photo to my Favourites, as a reminder of my dear old friend from Sweden! I hope your day was special for you.

I love this little bird, he looks as sweet as you!

Janice

Happy Birthday Gert

This is a really nice shot Gert with the slow shutter speed effect on the water. The Dipper is nicely placed in the shot. Lovely colours and an informative note. As always, crips, clear and sharp. :-)

Wonderful capture, composition, DOF, clarity and sharpness are absolutely stunning.

Hello Gert, nice work. I appreciate what you have done here..not easy to get a bird stationary even for that amount of time. I do think the whites are a little burnt and there is quite alot of noise (in relation to your normal standards) It's a great shot though with the movement of the water.

Happy Birthday!!!

That's not old, it's mature :-)

Congratulations, Gert.

Fascinating shot!
Happy birthday!

Thank you for your great contributions.
All the best to you,

Hi Gert,
Happy Birthday, I guess this is a good opportunity to thank you for your help, directly and indirectly, your critiques and workshops have been very helpful to me and I suspect to many others also.

A very nice shot, the 1/10 shutter speed is great for the water movement but combining that with the excellent detail in the bird is quite a capture. A nice composition with nice rich colours, a great shot.
Regards,
Adrian

Hi Gert!
Good to see water not ice ;-) Bird looks great - I like its pose and eye. He is thinking about something ;-) Blurred stream looks almost like on Luc's pictures. Very nice work my friend!

This photo is stunning in it's impact, drama, and beauty. I love the fast moving water, it's so amazing that the little bird can stand up in all that. The brown and gold colors under the water are so lovely, just like us "old" folks, all that beauty just below the surface, congrats on your day, 57 doesn't sound "old" to me, although I do now finally understand the saying "youth is wasted on the young".
Thanks for sharing this lovely photo on your special day.

Hi Ellis,

Gert, the slow speed did work well here.

I wish I had a model like this...

Excellent composition, colors and sharpness, even considering you use a monopod, and not a tripod.

Excellent image, love the blurred water from the long exposure, very nice work.
