[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today’s post is a small and beautiful duck, a Golden Eye.
It’s a common bird here in summer and now they have return to our small river even that the winter hasn’t passed. To shot this small bird in the flight is a challenge, they are very fast and small, to shot in-flight of Mallard is quite easy if you compare.
I took this with 1/125 sec and with help of the IS set to mode 2 I got a decent picture; the yellow eye is quite sharp. This was a grey and overcast day so the lovely green colour in the head is not seen.
But I hope you like it anyway.

Hi Gert,
Fantastic, he looks as if he is supersonic :-) Excellent panning to keep up with him at 1/125 and retain all of the detail, a great job. DOF is just right and the Duck is well framed. A great shot.
Regards,
Adrian

Good morning Gert, another lovely day down under, but a slight cool tinge in the air...

And what a neat image you have of Golden Eye, he sure lives up to his name. I love the look of movement here, it certainly shows how fast he is moving. Good job my friend.

Hello Gert,
Another very good in-flight shot.
I was practising today but I've a long way to go to get to your standard!
Excellent detail at 1/125 and you can tell that this little guy is really moving at some speed.
Great shot.

TFS

Hello Gert,

Another great in flight shot from you.

Not an easy one to get, but you managed to catch the eye very well.

Those wings look lethal...

Thank you for sharing it with us!

Hi Gert,
This is really great! The wing blur is perfect with some pan blur in the backround water. Great implied frantic motion ,with perfect detail in the ducks head and body. Very cool shot!

Hi Gert,
Looks like this goldeneye had some place to go.
Look at those wings flapping.
What a great capture. Lots of movement, yet super sharp details on the duck. The signature of a true master. TFS. : )

Hi Gert

Wow... how fast can this guy flap his wings? A lovely capture. The sharpness and clarity are spoton. Nice one! :-)

Hi Gert,
This is great! At 1/125th, the wings have vanished :) Makes it look like it's in hyper-drive..Top speed record and all!! Good sharpness and exposure on a very difficult subject..Well composed, nice even POV. Well done mf!

Hi Gert!
I like your experiment with long exposure time! This Golden Eye looks more like hummingbird with blurred wings! Nice, grey BG and fantastic eye. Good work my friend!

I cant resist to tell you some words on this unique shoot, Gert. I always tought that it was impossible to get an inflight shoot under 1/1000 second. You show me that that is possible at 1/125 with your lens.
In french we call them: Garot à oeil d'or.

We had snow (1cm) yesterday. Cloudy today and rain tomorrow. Perhaps I will have the time to write some comments. I was very lucky to find these foxes. There is a Casino on that Island. I am not a player but with the foxes, it is like winning a jackpot ;-)
Thank you old brother-friend.

A great shot ! Nice details, beautiful composition and wonderful colors. I love the golden eye of the bird, it comes out so nicely on the black head of the bird. The BG is great, too, with this beautiful blue color.

Hi Gert
Excellent capture of this fast moving duck under rather difficult circumstances. It just shows again - no matter how bad or adverse the circumstance, you can not beat a good photographer. There is always one way or another to compensate and skill & experience just have no end in the inventive ways to overcome the elements or condition nature might throw ones way.
I like how you captured the movement and it really shows that this guy is motoring as he flew past you. Those eyes are fixedly focused to the front. The photo has excellent colour, sharp details and well balanced contrasts.
Very well done and TFS.

Loot

Wow, this is a fast moving duck! I wonder if he saw the James Bond movie "golden eye"? :) Wonderful image, Gert and I am suprised you got it this sharp (without motion blur) with a shutterspeed of only 1/125. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi, Gert.
Superb camera work with only 1/125! Unbelievably sharp body and eye for such conditions and blurring wings are very good here.

Hello Gert,
Knowing this bird from Romania, where it winters on lakes, I can appreciate this difficult shot. They are fast indeed and the weather didn’t help you. Congratulations for a special action photo. Did you have the time to notice the melodious whistling these bird’s wings make in flight?
All the best,
Florin
