Today's post is from my archives.
I have seen a lot of picture today here on TN who are taken from last summer. I think all we who lives in the northern hemisphere are longing for the spring and summer. This is my contribution for the flashback.

This is a quite rare insect in Sweden, Macroglossum Scopoli,
(Swe Stor Dagsvärmare), it migrant to us and it can be seen it in the late summer and in the autumn. Some years the come in big numbers.
It looks like a humming bird when it stands in the air and sucking nectar.
I’m glad to have a catch of this beautiful insect.
I hope you like it.

Some info.
Wingspan: 40--45mm. A very distinct species confusable only with some freshly emerged Hemaris species which have not yet lost their wing scales. Not prone to much variation though sometimes very pale, albinistic specimens occur, as do individuals with blackish brown abdomens and hindwings (f. subnubila Schultz).
Source and more info here.

Technique:

Sigma 180mm Macro/3.5 EX HSM.
ISO 200, Raw-format, One-shot autofocus.
Convert, Levels, Contrast, Crop, resized to 800 pixels, USM on the B/W channel in lab-colours. I used Adobe Photoshop CS2 for PP

Hi Gert,

Well done on this rare catch for Sweden. Excellent colors and tones.
Noise around tongue and antenae. ;)I noticed a black line on the leaf which follows the contour of the tongue, shadow? or post pro oops?

Hello Gert!
Excellent in flight macro.Details are crisp clear
and razorsharp.I liked POV,lighting,motion effect
on wings and composition a lot.TFS...:-)

Hi Gert,
such a flashback is wonderful to overcome the cold days. This insect is so interesting, staying in the air while drinking.
I only had the chance for a shot 1 time this year, but only with bad quality. In Italy I saw them so often in the evening, but never had a camera with me ;-( Perhaps I have more luck this summer. Thanks and bye

Hi Gert,
magnificent close up of this quickly moving little hawkmoth. Not even a shutter speed of 1/800sec could freeze the motion of wings - but this is fine: You have managed to show both the markings of the wings and their quick humming motion. Outstanding! Details, colours, POV, composition: grade 1A - nothing more to say. Another great shot from your factory! Thank you, and best regards,
Peter

Well Gert...and you hid this picture in archive for six months??? I don't know what to say ;-) This is dream shot my friend! Perfect timing, moment, pose and blurred wing which adds dynamic to scene. Just great!

Thank you Gert,

I can almost hear the crickets chirping, the sound of a distant lawnmower cutting a lawn, and POP *#...is that the wind howling outside my window and beating the snow into the glass?
:-(

It was a nice moment that you captured, both in the moth and my head...

Excellent composition and details.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful flashback with us!

You are right, Gert. We are not the only one to dig in our archives.
I have seen similar insects last summer: see this one.
They are fascinated insects. The first time I saw one, I tought it was a small hummingbird.

Well seen and well done MOF&B.

Excellent details and sharpness, perfect composition and great colours. Fantastic work! Well done, Gert. Thank you.

Hey, I posted one from Spring tonight Gert!
This is excellent showing the moth(?) in full flight sucking up the nectar. Amazing layer of patterns on his body - nice and sharp. Well shown, tfs,

10.25pm, +25C and raining. Hurrah for the gardens!

Hi Gert!
Wonderful macro. It's very close and well detailed.I liked POV,colors, lighting and composition also. Thanks, have a nice days.
ALIRIZA

Very well composed with excellent detail, color, DOF and exposure Gert. Fantastic POV, showing the feeding action very well.
Super capture. Thank You mf.

Hi Gert

Very good in-flight shot. Nice lighting with good colours. Crisp, clear sharp details with great POV. Thanks.

Another great image Gert. Pity about the line that Mike found. Despite that it's not bad at all. the slight wing-blur gives the impression of movement, well done.

Hi Gert
What a licker. With a tongue like that I am sure no nectar would escape from it, it should be able to suck the nectar even from the deepest hidden places of any flower.
This is a magnificent macro. It is a perfect mid-air freeze frame of this moth apart from the fast moving wings.
Well done (again) and TFS.
Regards
Loot
PS. I like how you say "it stands in the air". Very apt description.

perfect, great capture!!!

It's really very good shot! I've seen this specie only twice - unfortunatelly I didn't have camera...
