I took this in the early morning today. The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a common bird here. And it stays the winter.
This is a male. He was looking for some larvae or insects in the old trees by the riverbank
He was very busy and did not notice me and I could come very close to him. 3-4 meters.
It’s a very beautiful bird. I hope you like him.

A common bird throughout Britain, but scarce in the extreme north of Scotland and absent from the Isle of Man, Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. A woodland species that also occurs in parks and gardens, often visiting bird tables. Small numbers of migrants of the Scandinavian race D.m.major occasionally turn up on the east coast.
The commonest woodpecker in most of Europe except perhaps in the south-east where the Syrian Woodpecker is abundant.

Technique:
Sigma 100-300 /4 EX HSM, Sigma 500 EF DG Super flash
ISO 200, Raw-format - 1/3 ev, Fill-in Flash - 2/3 ev, One shot Autofocus.
Converted, Levels/Curves, Contrast, Crop, resized to 800 pixels , converted to sRGB save as JPG for the WEB. I used Adobe Photoshop CS for PP

So much like our Downy ours is missing the red on the belly.
