Today’s post is a beautiful dragonfly. I have problems to ID most of the d-flies but I think this is a Sympetrum sanguineum, Rubby Darter female. It’s quite common up here.
I took this on field and was lucky to find a subject sitting on a straw quite clean from the BG.
It’s quite common up here
I hope you like her.
It will be my last post for at least one or maybe two weeks, we are leaving tomorrow for a vacation in Värmland.

/
Widespread and locally common in suitable sites. Adults can be seen between mid June and September. The Ruddy Darter is found in fens, cutover bogs and small lakes including turloughs. There is some evidence for immigration.
This species is most likely to be confused with the Red-veined Darter Sympetrum fonscolombei and the Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum however the latter is more orange-red and has a straight sided abdomen and yellow stripes on the legs. Female Ruddy Darters are similar to female Black Darters Sympetrum danae however in the former there is no black triangular marking on the thorax.

Hi Gert ,

A nice shot of this Dragonfly, very colourfull and detailed,I think most of us have the sme problems with the identification of some species, have a nice holiday and hope that the weather will cooporate,I will leave next week again to sea to do some work, will be back in about 2 months,

Regards,

Paul

Very beautiful capture, Gert.
If that is a female Darter, then I must revise the ID of the one I shot some time back and identified as Skimmer. If there are golden spots on wingtips of this d/fly (which is not very clear in this shot), then my insect in Darter and NOT Skimmer. Rest of the feature are exactly similar.
Have a great holiday.

Very nice post. Everything already have been said it is good picture and a beatifull dragonfly. It looks like he have to hold on because of wind or something

Hi Gert,
Another super macro of what most certainly got to be a female Ruddy Darter after comparing with the material and text on DragonflyIreland! It's so sharp and distinct with vibrating colours and an effective pose!
Wish you a very nice vacation,
Goran

Excellent macro Gert! The colors are great and the details are amazingly sharp. My only nit would be the oof white part directly visible behind the dragonfly. Other than that; this is a great picture. Well done & TFS!
