Today’s post is a rare butterfly, The Large Grizzled Skipper, Kattunvisslare, Pyrgus alveus
and I dedicate this one to Ivan (Argus) for all help with ID, verifying and correction he has given me. I really hope I have the correct ID this time. :-)
The Large Grizzled Skipper, is a rare butterfly in Sweden but in Fjärilsvägen Grinduga we have a quite big numbers.
I hope you like it.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Large Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus alveus) is a species of skipper (family Hesperiidae). It is a widespread species of continental Europe but is absent from northern Scandinavia and the British Isles.
This is a rather variable species with a wingspan of 22-32 mm (not always particularly "large") with several subspecies having been described. As with most Pyrgus species it has dark brown wings with pale chequered margins and is rather difficult to identify specifically in the field but good views reveal clear, well-spaced white spotting on the forewing and much fainter markings on the hindwings. The most likely confusion species is the Safflower Skipper (P. carthami). P. alveus is on the wing from June to August with one or two generations produced each year.
The larva has been recorded feeding on Agrimonia, Helianthemum, Polygala, Potentilla and Rubus.

Hi Gert, these butterflies are so great. Though we don't have this species in my country (but similar ones), they are amoung other butterflies hard to see. The sharp details on the hairy back are well shown. Good one.
Have a good leave.....

Hej Gert,
Thank you very much for the dedication! Much appreciated.
This is an excellent capture of the Large Grizzled Skipper, Kattunvisslaren, a species that I tried to photograph on Gotland some years ago but I only got one very poor shot. So it's nice to see a successful shot that is sharp throughout, taken fron an excellent POV and set in a nice composition against the leaf that it is settled on.
I must visit Grinduga next year!
TFS and have a fine time in Värmland!
Bästa hälsningar, Ivan

Hi Gert,
Beautiful light, excellent sharpness, well composed and so forth...
Never saw this one...
Well done!

Hello Gert,
small furry skippers are most suitable objects to show photographic skills as is done here. By optimal point of view and excat focus you open the potentials to study the details of the skipper, in particular its 'hairs', the wing scales and the antennae. Besides the professional presentation of the skipper, the picture is perfectly composed.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Gert,
These little ones are hard to catch so you've done really well! This shot is excellent, very sharp and well composed. Nice warm light too.
Hope you have a really good holiday!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hi Gert,
this one is lovely, I like the wide open wings to see every detail of the hairy body.
I'm just back from Italy - and I'm sad, there were almost no butterflies, I wonder where they have been?!? But I saw some nice dragonflies and flowers. Bye and greetings

Hi Gert

What a cute little hairy-fairy and a great dedication to Ivan. Maybe there are many butterflies flying around that can boast with a superior "coat-of-many-colours", but I don't think there's one with more beard. This is a truly fascinating species / specimen.

The composition worked great with the leaf cradling the butterfly and the superior details are in a league of its own. The splendid fresh colours gave it wonderful visual stimulus and the spot-on exposure levels ensured remarkable contrasts.

Great work and TFS.
Best regards.
Loot

Hello Gert,
Beatutiful shot with excellent sharpness, details and POV.
TFS, Smitha.
*Sorry, I ran out of smileys. Will be back.:)

Hi Gert,
This hairy little fella is really amazed me.
Excellent macro shot.

Hej Gert
I'll be back :)
Hälsningar
Ralf
p.s. Det regnar :(

Of course I like it, Gert!

You got an excellent POV and an excellent exposition in order to get this nice and sharp picture of this rare Hesperiidae! I like the fact that we can even feel the "fur" of the insect :-)

Having the insect in the same plan, I'm wondering if you chose a bigger aperture (f5.6) you should have maybe a less busy bg keeping the details of the butterfly...

Anyway, it is a great picture and TFS, Gert!

Michel
