Today’s post is a beautiful Arran Brown, Skogsgräsfjäril, Erebia Ligea.
It’s a very common butterfly, it’s quite large with a wing span 36-48mm,
it is on wings from mid-July to mid-August. It has a two years life cycle and it is
more abundant during odd years.
This copy was kind to open up the wings so could get a decent shot with my
“beer can”, it’s a pity the yellow flower (Mouse ear Hawkweed ) is slightly overexposed.
/
This is one of the largest of the Erebias. It is boldly marked. Distinctive features are the checkered fringes and on the bold white discal marks on the underside. It is widespread from the Alps and eastwards and in Scandinavia. Generally it is found at moderate altitudes but it also spreads to much lower altitudes than most other Erebias.

Hi Gert,
Outstanding shot of this beautiful butterfly and you have it in all its glory. Lovely colours and patterns on its wings and the image is immaculately sharp. Superb lighting and the focus is spot-on here. The yellow flower adds brightness and the BG is so special. Excellent POV and DOF. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Gert,

Gorgeous as always. The butterfly and flower are both beautiful in their own rights but your artistic touch makes them extraordinary. Fantastic colors, details, background and composition.

Hej Gert,
Ivan is going to be jealous - he's been trying really hard to get this one down by the coast. This is a great shot showing it with the wings wide open. It's a little worn but they're the same down here due to all the heavy rain. Brilliant composition!
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hej Gert,
The Arran Brown is very rare in Scania where it occurs only in a small locality near us in Åhus. I tied to get a good shot of it but either it was too worn or it settled in the wrong place in high grass etc.
So Ulla is right I am envious of this fine capture techinicall first class and well presented.
Well done and TFS!
Hälsningar, Ivan

Ser fram emot att se ditt område på Marma skjutfält på torsdag. Hoppas vädret blir bra!

Hello Gert,
thank you for posting this beautiful picture of Erebia ligea, well-arranged and with excellent sharpness. Yesterday, I turned back home from a 4-weeks trip to the Italian Alps where I could observe several different Erebia-species. I will post pictures of them and intend to prepare a 'Theme' on the genus Erebia. I will include your picture of ligea there if you like.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Gert,
Beautiful capture. A wonderful butterfly you photograhed here.
Well done

Simple, precisa u de colores reales. Encuadre correcto. No es una de tus "bombas" pero buena fotografía. Saludos Gert.

Hello Gert,
I've missed your beautiful shots! When I saw this, without seeing sender name, "Aha!" I said, "It must belong to Gert!" I wasn't mistaken :)

It needs only to say "PERFECT". You have done always the best my friend. Congratulations! And I hope one day I can take perfect photos like this.

Greetings from Turkey

Great notes Gert!
Can you believe it? I actually learned something!
Perfect depth of field and point of view.
The yellow flower is nice not burnt out.

Great work!
Elton

Hello Gert,
Gorgeous buttefly image again.
Not that I did expect anything else from you, but this image has superb sharpness, lighting and DOF.
Composition is perfect and the details, colors and very pleasing soft background are most wonderful.
The slightly overexposed flower you did mention is'nt distracting at all. In fact if you would not have mentioned it, I would not have noticed :)
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards,
Harry

Hi Gert

How I hope that someday I might find a posting of you where I can actually provide you with a useful critique. Something that might be fresh or from which you can actually learn, but how does the student present the master with such insight when everything the master already forgotten the student still needs to learn. So I can only continue by expressing my appreciation and delight in your work as it never seizes to amaze me.

This little butterfly with the interesting marks is just beautiful. Well captured and excellently presented and just to demonstrate the degree of your high standards and self criticism you even expressed your pity that the hawkweed flower is slightly overexposed.

Well done MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot
