[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This s common and beautiful butterfly and this one must be of the
second generation, the first is on wings in Mars-April since the wintering
as an adult. It’s quite big with a wing-span 40-52 mm.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Small Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis urticae) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe. There are a few records from New York City which, however, are believed to have arrived human-assisted.
This is a species often found in gardens. The caterpillars feed on nettles, as do those of several Nymphalidae butterflies.
The adult is striking, with its dark body and red and yellow wings, which have a row of blue dots around the rear edge. However, the underwings are dull, which helps to conceal stationary or hibernating individuals. When threatened, resting individuals rapidly open theior wings, presenting the dramatic display of colors. This can frighten away young or inexperienced birds (Stevens 2005).
The butterfly is abundant in most areas of the United Kingdom and Ireland. However, its availability often varies yearly. Its commonness may often depend on the status of the common wasp in that particular season, as the wasp is known to feed on the Tortoiseshell's pupae.
The Corsican Small Tortoiseshell Nymphalis (urticae) ichnusa looks very similar; whether it is a subspecies or a distinct species is yet to be determined

Hej Gert,
Superb shot of the nässelfjäril!
Everything is right about it: even the composition withthe thin stems looks very good.
It would be interesting to know how near you have to come to the butterfly with a 32mm extension tube and a 400 mm?
TFS.
Hälsningar,
Ivan

Hi Gert,
you are so lucky to see this one and capture it. As I already said, we don't have butterflies here this year. I also haven't seen one single Common darter, but lots of other dragonflies. I wonder!
Thanks for your beauty

Hi Gert!

Surprise, I posted same butterfly two minutes ago :-) Believe me or not, but I didn't saw your post before.

Also very common in Poland, so common that we don't see its beauty. Great shot my friend, very colorfull and well composed. Small flower is almost invisible and your butterfly looks like floating in air. I'm glad that you captured many of these insects this year!

Hi Gert,
In the Netherlands we call this lovely butterfly a "Kleine Vos" wich literaly means "Small Fox".
Wonderful butterfly image again with perfect sharpness and lighting like I'm used to looking at your shots.
Colors and details are most wonderful, but pity the background is a little busy.
I suppose the butterfly was moving it's right wing and therefore there is some blur in it.
Not that such does effect the beauty of this image because it does'nt.
Thanks for sharing and the great note,
Best regards,
Harry

Hi Gert,

Hello Gert,
Beautiful shot of the Small Tortoiseshell, great sharpness, very fine and soft background. I like also the composition and the general light impression of the picture.
Best regards

hej gert!
visst är den underbar denna glugg?
superskarp och fin bild på en fin fjäril!
very good!

Hello Gert,

This is a great capture of one of my favorite butterflies! I like the way you composed the image by placing the butterfly between the two brown twigs. Maybe it is a little to close to the center but this is just my opinion. The subject stands out perfectly against the blurred background. I love the way you enhanced the blue spots along the edges of the wings. Did you do it in PP or is it just the way the camera recorded it? Exposure is spot on and I appreciate that even the white spots haven't lost the details. Well done! TFS!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Hej Gert,
Outstanding capture of this fresh specimen showing the row of blue spots very clearly.
Very fine colours and I like its position on the Scabious flower and the diagonal stalks in the background. A lovely composition!

Gert, Lovely shot and wow what a wonderful colors you have here for us. Excellent position and subject on the frame and lovely focus. Well done Ganesh

This is another amazing butterfly picture from you Gert! This is so sharp. I'm also glad to see that I'm not the only crazy person who takes butterflies picture @ 400mm and I'm amazed by this clarity that you got using extension tube; I have tried once but that wasn’t a conclusive (is it a word?) experience ! :)! Details, colors, exposure and composition are wonderful. I love this blurred BG that suits your little model perfectly! TFS,
Claudine

This butterfly is just gorgeous.
The colors and markings are so striking,

Great exposure that brings out the warmth of those oranges and the sheen from those blues.
Excellent POV and composition as well.
