First I will thank all for the nice comments and words of my last post.

This morning Micke and I was out in our hide again and it was the nice first winter day with some snow on the ground. The winter light is amazing when the snow is reflecting the light without any shadows and hard contrast.
This is a well known woodpecker, the Great Spotted Woodpecker and this one is a male, It’s a quite big bird 23-26 cm long, with a 38-44 cm wingspan and it’s quite common up here.

It is distributed throughout Europe and northern Asia. It is largely resident except in the colder regions of its range.
It is an inhabitant of woodlands and parks, depending for food and nesting sites upon old trees. It is often an inconspicuous bird, in spite of the plumage. The large white shoulder patch is a feature that catches the eye.
Great Spotted Woodpecker is 23-26 cm long, with a 38-44 cm wingspan. The upper parts of the male are glossy black, with a crimson spot on the nape and white on the sides of the face and neck. On the shoulder is a large white patch and the flight feathers are barred with black and white. The three outer tail feathers are barred; these show when the short stiff tail is outspread, acting as a support in climbing. The under parts are buffish white, the abdomen and under tail coverts crimson. The bill is slate black and the legs greenish grey,
The female has no crimson on the nape, and in the young this nape spot is absent, but the crown is crimson. It may be distinguished from the smaller Lesser Spotted Woodpecker by the crimson on the abdomen.
There are several subspecies, including the prehistoric P. m. submajor which lived during the last ice age.

Lovely fresh winter image you shot only today, Gert.
The signs of winter appear in the shape of light flurry of snow on the tree trunk.
The Woodpecker looks beautiful in this remarkably sharp and crisp shot.
TFS and regards,
Ram

winter?! snow?! holy c**p..it looks cold - but the white really brings out the colors and patterns on the plumage of the pretty
woodpecker. excellent compositon and pov showing us a terrific pose of the bird almost sitting in the snow. well done & best wishes, thor.

Hi Gert

This is an absolutely brilliant shot from so many points of view!
First, it’s great to see our first winter shot here on TN :)
Then, yes, you are right (as always) - the reflection of the light form the snow is indeed terrific for such captures since it's a nice, well tones light, not too bright though and coming for all directions, illuminating your subject perfectly.
And, needless to say, you shot here is impressive technically, too. I mean the sharpness is simply fantastic! The entire body and head of the woodpecker is in exceptional focus...even the branch, too...and presented with such an amazing attention to details and texture.
The exposure and metering are also flawless - fact proven perfectly by the colors on the bird.
On top of everything, a lovely diagonal composition that really enhances the presentation.
Impeccable work, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Gert,

Amazing details and colours. Beautiful composition with a suttle BG.

Wanted to ask you why a Canon and not your Sony Alpha, then saw that it was given to Annica. Hmmm, need to follow her work now :-).

Great work,

Hello Gert, winter there already and the woodpecker is so well captured, what texture to your photo! Crip as crusty snow on a cold morning. We see what we have to see, the rest is in the background. TFS!

Francine

What a stunning pose! The colors are so vivid that even the snow really adds another layer of it's own. I love the sharpness of the bird and the soft texture of his feathers.

Hi Gert,
as I see you also have snow now - and with the winter all the wonderful birds are again "back". Of course they are here all the time but with all the leaves we aren't able to see them very often. Your shot is excellent, this is a beautiful woodpecker. Thanks and greetings, enjoy the sunday

(here in Laval, province of Québec, Canada we don't have snow yet)

excellent sharpness and details on the branch and on the bird,
nice density on the colors, it is the pov and the appropirate vertical
framing of the image that i like most,
