This is a great in-flight capture, showing that the greater-spotted, like many woodpeckers flighs by closing its wings for a half second between wing-flaps.
You got him sharply too and made a fine comp.

This is indeed a treu action shot! :)
The speed here is fantastic - both yours and the birds, and the fact that you managed to freeze the motion is remarcable.
Also, the sharpness is excellent, the focus is great, the DOF is impeccable and the colors are charming.
It's very nice too se a woodpecker in-flight...not quite frequent here on TN, if you know what i mean ;)

Hello Mikael,

What a beautiful bird and what a great composition! Here is a good example of how to compose an image following the rule of thirds. You positioned the bird in one of the strongest points of the picture. Very well done!
Using a large aperture you created a nice and defocused background which enhances your composition. The colors are bright and natural and they make a great contrast with the blue sky in the background.
A very good job on focus too! In spite of the fast moving bird and the shallow DOF you managed to keep both the woodpeaker and the tree in focus. The details are sharp and you really froze the bird in mid-air, thanks to this very fast shutter speed! Also the exposure was also well controlled. The highlights and shadows were not over-, respectively underexposed. Even the catchlights in the eyes are not missing, in spite of not using a flash. An outstanding work overall! Thanks!
