Excellent capture of both Hover Fly and flower! It does look funny with the eyes covered in pollen! Very sharp details and fine colours. I like your composition too.
This is most probably Volucella inanis.

Excellent capture of a hoverfly on a scabious flower. I think Ulla is right about the ID.
You got very good DOF with only f4. As usual the technical and aesthetic standards are first rate.

I agree with Adrian, surprisingly long DOF @ F/4.
Well composed on the diagonal, good POV.
Color, exposure, and detail are excellent. The sprinkling of pollen adds that "bad boy" look too ;)

Hi Gert,
As usual a great joy to look at an one of your very beautiful uploads.
In this case I think you did capture a rare fly, atleast for the region you live, wich is called a Syrphidae or flower fly.
You will find all information about this and other flies like this one OVERHERE
Sharpness, clarity, lighting and composition are as perfect as ever and the colors and details are most wonderful due to that technical perfection.

Great, sharp and very colourful picture. I like natural pose of this Syrphid fly (I agree with Ulla and Ivan about species ID).
My favourite part of this picture is contrast between well presented fly and delicate and warm coloured BG.
This is really very good work!

Hello Gert,

It's a pleasure to see this great macro photograph of yours! I'm afraid I am not able to help you with the ID since I have absolutely no experience with this group of insects. This guy definitely doesn't care about the pollen in his eyes.

Composition:

There's nothing I could improve at your composition. The place where you positioned the insect is well chosen. It leaves plenty of empty space in front of the hoverfly while the subject itself is placed in one of the most powerful points of the composition. The perfectly blurred background isolates the subject from the surroundings and compliments the shot.

Colors:

The colors of the picture are natural and well saturated. The green tones in the background contrast nicely with the colors in the foreground. I like the textures in the hoverfly's wings and the transparency was rendered perfectly.

Contrast:

The contrast is outstanding. It emphasizes the details in both the flower and the hoverfly.

Exposure:

A good exposure on the subjects rendered great details in both highlights and shadows. I find it difficult to expose black areas correctly especially when there are large white areas in the subject and the light is strong.

Focus:

Excellent focus on the hover fly to show all those sharp details. The nervures in the wings and the hair on the fly's back are especially good looking. So are the stamens of the flowers. The well controlled DOF adds a bit of perspective to your picture.
