[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My today's post is juvenile Bluethroat captured in Gävle area or Villa Rettig. This place is one of the favorite place of our TN friend Gert or ellis49 which I visited last weekend. Reason of my visit was to say hello to Gert and try to photograph Bluethroat. Unfortunately weather was not on my side :( This is the only shot I managed to photograph in the last day before we left the place. It was raining first day and second day was heavy clouds. Bluethroat usually show they beauty when sun is shining and all insects shows up... which most of the birds do and than they can hunt their food...

Captured with 5D @ 800mm.

Thanks Gert and Bengt

The Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family Turdidae, but is now more generally considered to be an Old World flycatcher, Muscicapidae. It, and similar small European species, are often called chats.

It is a migratory insectivorous species breeding in wet birch wood or bushy swamp in Europe and Asia with a foothold in western Alaska. It nests in tussocks or low in dense bushes. It winters in north Africa and India.

The Bluethroat is similar in size to the European Robin at 13-14 cm. It is plain brown above except for the distinctive black tail with red side patches. It has a strong white supercilium.

The male has a blue bib edged below with successive black, white and rust coloured borders. Some races, such as L. svecica svecica (Red-spotted Bluethroat) of northern Eurasia, have a red spot in the centre of the blue bib.

Others, such as L. svecica cyanecula (White-spotted Bluethroat) of southern and central Europe, have a white spot in the centre of the blue bib. L. svecica magna in Turkey has no central spot.

Females of all races usually have just a blackish crescent on an otherwise cream throat and breast. Newly fledged juveniles are freckled and spotted dark brown above.

Despite the distinctive appearance of the males, recent genetic studies show only limited variation between the forms, and confirm that this is a single species.

The male has a loud, varied, and sometimes imitative song reminiscent of its relative, the Nightingale. Its call is a typical chat “chack” noise.

Hej Ralf,
Congratulations on this capture of the Bluethroat!
This is a species that I am longing to capture and I am thinking of taking a trip to the Swedish mountains next summer to capture a singing male amongst, other things.
This sharp shot shows all the best features of this juvenile in excellent lighting in a great composition with the raspberry leaves and natural bokeh.

Fine details and good POV.
Ja det blev en till slut i alla fall.
I dag var det mycket bättre väder och det blev några bergfinkar
på kortet. I morgon ska jag försöka med blåhakarna igen.
Hälsa Karin och hoppas att hon är bättre från förkylningen.

Hej Ralf,
Well, at least you got him!! And what we see here is in sharp focus showing great details and lovely colours in the fine light. I rather like his surroundings too, the brown autumn leaves are very fitting. An excerllent composition too.

Excellent composition!
Allowing us to see the bird in its natural environment permits us to appreciate how it might also hide from eyes less watchful than yours
