Today’s post is a Coal Tit (Svartmes), in fact the first one for me even they are quite common, so I’m happy for this one. I took this when Micke and I was out for the Siberian Jay.
He looks like a pale cousin to the Great tit without the zipper on the belly and with ”bull neck”. And it’s a bit smaller too. The Swedish name “Svartmes” mean Black tit.
Sometimes can the Coal tit raise a small crest but that do not happen often but I was lucky here,

PLS
No points for this, I have given them up like some others. I have turn of the points, so don’t waste your green ones.

The Coal Tit, Periparus ater (often still Parus ater), is a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is a widespread and common resident breeder throughout Europe, Asia and northern Africa. It is resident, and most birds do not migrate.
The Coal Tit is 10–11.5 cm in length, and has a distinctive large white nape spot on its black head. The head, throat and neck of the adult are glossy blue-black, setting off the white on the nape and sides of the face; the white tips of the coverts show as a double wingbar. The underparts are white shading through buff to rufous on the flanks. The bill is black, the legs lead-coloured and irides dark brown.
The young bird is duller than the adult, the black head having no sheen, and the white of the nape and cheeks is tinged with yellow.
There are a number of subspecies. The British race P. a. britannicus has an olive brown back, distinguishing it from the nominate continental race P. a. ater in which the back is bluish grey. The North African race P. a. ledouci has yellow underparts and cheeks, and the Cypriot P. a. cypriotes has a buff tinge to its upperparts, and deep buff underparts.

Hej Gert,
This is a fine close portrait of our Svartmes. I like the composition on a single twig. The lighting is perfect with the sun shining at just the right angle to give a good catchlight in the eye. Technically superb!

Hi Gret.
Tell me, please. Can be photo better than yours? I think, I know correct answer. But I do not know yet what image is better, image of the bird, or image of the broken twig, or image of the BG. Fantastic by subject and quality picture. Bravo, my dear friend.

Hi Gert,

All birds are created equal until they are photographed by you - then they become superior. Perfect picture of this Tit - colors, pose, details, composition - all perfect.

Great picture of what seems to be a very happy tit in full daylight, superb! I really like the composition with the tree branch rising high in the frame and the little tit on top. The colours are great, the presence of the bird is lively and joyful, thank you!

Francine

You fellow who do so well with the birds continue to amaze me. There is a sharpness to your images almost as a science a surgeon would study for years to learn....along with a true concern and understanding of the birds and such which you picture. Photos such as these are inspirational and for that and your kind words I thank you!

Hello Gert
Lovely shot of the Coal Tit.
The central placement of the subject gives it an interesting turn. The catchlight enlivens the crisp clean capture of this beuatiful bird

Hello Gert,

What an incredible clarity and detail. Splendid. Razorsharp, Ful of fine detrails. Just the natural colors. Very nice composition. By the way take a look at here/his nails (whow...)what a big proportion to its size (-:

Hi Gert,

A wonderful shot of this Coal Tit with stunning detail, great colour and light and the backdrop is simply stunning. I wasn't sure anout the central composition at first, but actually I thinks it's right in the particular case with the bird's head turned slightly towards the camera. Super shot.

Hej Gert,
This is a very pretty bird that used to come to our garden in England quite frequently. Excellent sharp capture of its profile and fine colours. A little pity that the typical white patch on the neck doesn't show here but I like the little tuft on its head. Well done!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hallo Gert
Great composition of this tit shot. Lovely posing and all the elements make an impressive photo. A really elegant and fancy little bird. I like that little bit of feathers standing up straight on its head. The catch light in the eye is of course the cherry on the cake. A delightful image which I enjoyed looking at. Lovely background. Well done as always. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
Ps. My colleague is flying to Denmark on Sunday for almost three weeks to visit her daughter. She says they go over to Sweden on a ferry.

H Gert,
Great capture in beautiful light. You've obtained great separation of that black eye from the plumage. Love the catch light. Not easy to do. High quality.
