Such a delightful little bird to look at. The sunlight caught on its face makes it super special. The colour of the plumage is great and I especially fancy the black stroke alongside the eye, as it gives it a semi-masked appearance. Indeed a masked wonder. The sharp edged shiny charcoal coloured beak is olala! I like it very much and it is lovely to see one of your cuties that is not captured on the snow or with a snow covered background. A view that is jam packed with a variety of awesome and most favourable features and indeed a feast to the eye. All the best for 2009 and thanks for your valuable input on the site in the past.

This is a really beautiful and a hard to get catch. Congratulations for that. Here in Småland we have them in the wintertime and they establish a kind of winter territory that they guard by using certain posts. You just have to wait at one of them to get a good look of them even though it is very difficult to get this close.

Hi Gert,

A beautiful capture (in spite of what you say) of this lovely bird which I have only seen in pictures. The face is wonderful with the eye shining through the black mask. Fine details of the wings and plumage. The colors look so natural and pretty. A lovely composition and background.

Hi Gert. Congrats on a first for you. I a very nice bird to capture. The light looks good to me but i know we are always after somthing better.You have warm colours and fine detail in the buff coloured feathers.with a catch light in the eye. Well done TFS.

This is an excelent photo of this bird. You have chosen a fine POV showing so well the tiny bird. The light you have chosen looks very fine as its warm colors makes colors look fine. It is also the extreme sharpness that adds value to the photo.

noticing a rare bird is exciting enough. Finding it facing the low sun from a perfectly well shaping angle may be called good luck - or the well deserved reward for someone with great knowledge and experience who spends hours in the cold loving nature devotedly.

Hi Gert,

you don't have to minimize the quality of your picture at all. The low sun adds color to what could be drab grey winter light. Sensational, to see a shrike in winter. Thanks for mpresenting this one.

I have met this species few times and even managed to take pictures (which will be in my archive forever due their quality :). Your shot is outstanding in ever aspect. First of all it is beautifulness of the scene. Twig matter and splendid BG are amazing and image of the bird is awesome. Whole bird and every part is reproduced fantastically: feathers, patch of light in the eye, beak, etc. My congratulation and TFS.

So I must dis-agree when you say the light is not the best.
Excellent detail/DOF, POV, BG, and a nice catchlight too..
Really like the comp with the fan of tree top branches beneath the bird.
