[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A group of redpolls was visiting our birdfeeder yesterday afternoon,as they were not that timid I could make some captures of them, this one was sitting in our peartree, thanks for watching and enjoy the weekend

The Redpolls are a group of small passerine birds in the finch family Fringillidae which have characteristic red markings on their heads. They were formerly placed into the genus Acanthis together with the linnets and the twite, but their closest relatives are actually the crossbills, that are placed in the genus Loxia[1]. The latter genus could be merged with Carduelis in a single genus, for which the name Loxia would then have priority. But this would imply to change the name of a large number of species, and as their adaptations and biogeography are evolutionarily quite peculiar, it would be better to reinstate Acanthis instead, including only the redpolls. There are several different very closely related (Seutin et al., 1995) forms of redpolls which could be considered as anything from one to five species (Knox, 1988). Recent studies (Herremans, 1990; Sangster et al., 2002) tend to support three species, but this is certainly not definite.

All redpolls are northern breeding woodland species, associated with birch trees. They are small dumpy birds, brown or grey-brown above and with a red forehead patch. The adult male's breast is washed in red, but in females and young birds the buff breast and white belly are streaked with brown. The bill is small and yellow. Some birds, particularly young ones, are difficult to assign to species.

They are primarily seed-eaters, and often feed acrobatically like a tit; their diet may include some insects in summer. They have a dry reeling song and a metallic call. They lay 4-7 eggs in a nest in a tree or, in the case of Arctic Redpoll, a large bush. They can form large flocks outside the breeding season, sometimes mixed with other finches.

Hallo Paul,
Goede foto van deze Grote Barmsijs. Misschien was ietsje meer contrast in de foto mogelijk geweest, maar even zo goed zijn de kleuren erg mooi. Erg goede scherpte en een leuke spagaat pose. Prachtige compositie.
Groet,
Peter

Hi Paul,

A beautiful capture of this Redpoll on the snowy tree. How nice of him to be a willing model. I love the pose - I don't think he could spread his legs apart any further. I see he is holding something in his beak but I'm not sure what it is. Wonderful colors and details of his face, eye, and feathers. A nice composition in the V of the tree.

Weer een mooie. Toch oppassen om niet te 'bright' te gaan. Zit hier wel op een laptop te kijken, maar toch..

Moment is weer heel mooi en dan in een winters decor.
Goede focus. Veel details in de vogel. Heel goede compositie.

Hi Paul.
Splendid picture of a very nice scene. Its quality is the highest. Exposure, combination of the razor sharpness of the main subject (charming bird, tree fork and snow) and pleasant blurriness of the BG are outstanding also as well as POV and composition of the picture. My congratulations and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hi Paul,
Beautiful caught of this redpoll with snow,
very sharp and clear picture,
great colors and détails.
Bravo..
Michel

Hallo Paul
Superb photography. Every little detail is just excellent. From the fine feathers on the head, right down to the paws clutching onto the branch. It is amazing how perfect the back feathers are, as if each one was painted by hand. This is really outstanding. I love the pose of the bird with its paws on either side of the branch. Details are razor sharp and colours wonderful. I like the neutral background and te snow on the branches, which compliment the colours of the bird's plumage and brings it out to its best. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
