| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Went to the coast yesterday with my wife as it quite warm yesterday,as we laid on a rock some female eiders with youngsters were passing by,I managed to take some shots, unfortunatly the males had already flown (something they normally do by mid-incubation).
The Eider is a widespread species on both the east and west coast of Sweden especially in the archipelagos. Large numbers of Eiders are also breeding in other Baltic countries. During the autumn, the Eiders leave the Swedish east coast as well as most other breeding areas in the Baltic gathering in the south-western part of the Baltic, in the Kattegat and in the North Sea. There is a wintering population on the Swedish west coast, but numbers in the southernmost province of Scania as well as in the Baltic are very low.
Midwinter indices are representative of the population along the southern part of the Swedish west coast not including the major wintering areas in the province of Bohuslän, where index counts were not undertaken before 1987. During the years the counts have shown marked fluctuations with peaks during the mild winters in the seventies and in the nineties.During January 1999 and 2000 the highest indices of the series were recorded, but there was later a minor drop to January 2001. January index for 2003 was low, but it was a cold winter. In January 2004 the index was once again much higher, being similar in 2005.
September indices are also only available for the southern part of the Swedish west coast. During the period 1973 to 1985 the indices were more or less stable, but from 1985 to 1999 there is a decrease in the September indices being especially marked from 1992, which continued to September 2002 and 2004.
Even if the counts only cover a small part of the southern Swedish west coast (few Eiders in the Baltic) they show the same decrease as has been noted in other European areas. Infortunately we do not have any data from the archipelagos of Bohuslän, the main wintering area of the species, to evaluate the situation there. |

Hi Paul.
It's a very lovely picture with beautiful colours, light and shadows. The shot is composed very well. If the second eider would appear in focus too, the picture would be outstanding. Perfect done. TFS.
Alexei.
Beautiful calm pic, I love the contrast bet the brown birds and the blue water. I did not like the frame, the picture is good enough without it. Ori

Hi Paul,
Excellent shot, a nice moment to capture. Great detail, beautiful colours, the contrast of the browns and blues are great. I agree with Alexei, having the little fellow in focus too would be good. Still a great shot though.
Regards,
Adrian
