[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today a second posting of my meeting with the parrot crossbill last week in the forest,it was as said before a cloudy day and I used fillflash to brighten some things up,however the crossbill is not that good shown in this upload,I like the fact how he sits between the pincones,hope you like it as well.


Parrot Crossbill

This bird gets its name from the parrot-like proportions of its massive bill. In all plumages it looks very much like a Crossbill and therefore can only be identified by looking carefully at the exact shape of its bill. Apart from being bigger, the bill also looks squarer since it is deeper, relatively shorter and angled more vertically at the tips. The lower mandible has an obvious bulge which gives the bill a distorted look.

Breeds and winters in coniferous plantations and woodlands with a preference for pines.

A resident but dispersive bird, prone to large-scale irruptions.

Hej Paul,
I never tire of seeing these beautiful birds, the colour of this male is lovely! I like its pose above the pine cones too, but I expect he's just spotted a female above! :-)

Hi Paul,
I think the bird looks great with the pine cones and evergreen, they provide excellent natural framing. I like the POV and birds pose, as it looks up into the top left corner. Very good detail/DOF, and the colors look good even with the fill flash..
