[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In the beginning during my visits in nature and looking for the birds all my observations was based on looking and not so much of listening. Now I am listening too and this is the much better way to found birds during the summer when vegetation is growing and covering all trees and bushes. When I was walking in the nature reserve Sandemar few days ago I suddenly heard sound which I know that come from Yellowhammer. I turned on left side and saw this yellow guy on this stone. My fast reaction scared this guy and I managed to take only one shot. Later @ home I was pleased with quality of this shot :)

The Yellowhammer, Emberiza citrinella, is a passerine bird in the bunting family Emberizidae, which breeds across Europe and much of Asia. The Yellowhammer was introduced to New Zealand in 1862 and is now common and widespread there. It is probably more abundant in New Zealand now than in Europe where is in serious decline, (in the UK the species fell by 54% between 1970 and 2003). In Europe and Asia most birds are resident, but some far northern birds migrate south in winter. It is common in all sorts of open areas with some scrub or trees and form small flocks inwinter .

The Yellowhammer is a robust 15.5-17 cm long bird, with a thick seed-eater's bill. The male has a bright yellow head, yellow underparts, and a heavily streaked brown back. The female is much duller, and more streaked below. The familiar, if somewhat monotonous, song of the cock is often described as A little bit of bread and no cheese.

Its natural diet consists of insects when feeding young, and otherwise seeds. The nest is on the ground. 3-6 eggs are laid, which show the hair-like markings characteristic of those of buntings.

It is most commonly found on lowland arable and mixed farmland, probably due to the greater availability of seeds. It nests in hedges, patches of scrub, and ditches, especially if these have a wide grass margin next to them, and a cereal crop next to the margin. Hedges of up to two meters tall are preferred, and they will not nest until it is in full leaf, building the nest next to the hedge if it is built before this. In winter, the flocks feed at good seed sites, such as newly-sown fields and over-wintered stubbles.

I agree, nowadays I hear more birds than I see!
A good way of finding birds like this male Yellowhammer, well captured on a rock against a superb green bokeh.

I must admit that I'm a lazy listener when it comes to birds as Ivan does it for me and he is brilliant!! Mind you, you can hardly miss the sound of this little bird! Lovely capture you got, very sharp and beautiful light and colours.

Hermosa la foto, y por seguro tienes un muy buen pulso, pues tomar fotos en 400mm. sin tripie es un gran logro. Los colores son muy bellos asi como el fondo.

Hi Ralf,

Even though he was so elusive you managed one beautiful shot of this Yellowhammer. I love the pose on the rock, the natural colors and the fine details of the bird, and the wonderful green background. You are so right - especially during the summer with the thick leaves on the trees our ears are as important as our eyes.

Hi Ralf. This is a bird i see very little of in Southern England.A few years ago there use to be a lot of them. You have captured this one with fine detail and rich colours. Stands out so well against the plain green BG. well done TFS.

A nice capture of this Yellowhammer. Great light and colours, good depth of field and good detail. Some halos around the bird, especially the wing and tail.
