[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This tern is looking for fish to feed its fledgelings that wait to be fed on a rock some distance away in the shallows near the estuary of one of the largest rivers in Sweden, Dalälven.

This is a Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), called Fisktärna in Swedish, which means, just 'fish tern'.
The name is rather banal as there isn't a tern species in the world that does not feed mainly on fish. It swoops down for small fish near the surface of the water.

The Common Tern closely resembles the Arctic Tern but can be told apart by the black tip to its bill and the shorter tail feathers.

The Common Tern is, as the name implies, the most common species of tern in Europe, frequenting most types of large stretches of water where it nests on inaccessible rocks, usually out in the water.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 15 meters, is fairly heavily cropped and sharpened after size reduction.

Hello Ivan, a fine capture of this flying tern. It is already in moult towards winter plumage.
In dutch it's name is Visdief, which means "Thief of fish". Aparantly a kind of nickname given by fishermen is earlier days. By the the way: the name Sterna hirundo was given by Linnaeus in 1758 already refering to another nickname: sea swallow tern. But is was Gesner in 1555 who named this tern the: Larus Piscator Fischerlein. The relation to fish was probably made because this species was the most common tern fishing in 'our' waters.
Anyway, I can never see too many pictures of terns
Regards, JAcob

Hi Iavn

very well done
Paul

Hello Ivan,

You show us a beautiful, simple and efficient composition. I like the lack of distracting objects and the way you used the rule of thirds to place the subject into one of the hotspots. The in-flight pose of the Tern is very well captured and the large empty space you placed in front of it is very welcome. The blue sky is the best background for bird photos especially when in flight as it isolates the subject perfectly. Exposure was perfectly handled. I think you pushed the histogram as far towards the right as possible and this allowed you not to blow the highlights in the upper sunlit areas while still preserving details in the shadows. I would have liked to see a little more light in the eye but this is just a minor point. It's just my preference and doesn't distract from the beauty of your picture. The red beak of the bird is the cherry on the cake, from a chromatic POV. I don't know whether you used a continuous focusing function in the camera but the focus is sharp and on the subject. The extremely fast shutter speed froze the tern in mid air and the relatively small aperture took care that no sharpness fall-off occurs on the subject. A very good capture that you framed using a simple and elegant frame. Great notes too! Thank you!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Hi Ivan.
What a great reproduction of the beautiful gull in-flight. I like the blue-grey colour palette of the shot so much, excellent reflection of the typical pose of the bird, superb art reproduction of its plumage and other details and nice composition of the picture. Exposure parameters are selected precisely. Excellent job and my heart wishes.
Alexei.

Nice sharp image of the tern against a great sky. The lens really worked well in giving good detail. Well done.

TFS!

c'est une bonne photo de cet oiseau qui vole generalement assez vite et qui ne laisse pas beaucoup de temps pour faire la mise au point.
