I hound this Black Woodpecker in area called Hjälstaviken few days ago. It is my first shot of this big guy and I was really glad :) I hope you like it...

The Black Woodpecker, Dryocopus martius, is a large woodpecker, 40-46 cm long with a 67-73 cm wingspan.

It lives in mature forest across the northern palearctic. It is the sole representative of its genus in that region. Its range is expanding in Eurasia. It does not migrate.

The plumage of this crow-sized woodpecker is entirely black apart from a red crown. In males, the entire crown is red, but in females only the hindcrown. The sexes differ even as nestlings.

The Black Woodpecker's flight is straight, not dipping like other woodpeckers.

The nest is a tree-hole into which four or more eggs are laid.

Hej Ralf,
A great capture: I would be very pleased to get such a shot of the Black Woodpecker and I have been trying for some time.
Great pose to make max use of the POV taken from behind showing the features well against a blue sky.
TFS this beauty,
Hälsningar,
Ivan

Hi Ralf,
I love it ----------Have never seen a black woodpecker.
Well seen and captured..

Best Regards,
Jane

This has startling and stunning details! The clarity is fantastic, the POV is unusual - but in a delightful way, and the colors are vibrant, alive almost.

His pose if amusing; don't ask me why, but I'm reminded of the exorcist! (Perhaps some sense of strange humor in some unknown gene?)

Regardless, this is a beauty and I've never seen one before. Thanks for posting, and also, your notes are detailed and helpful.
Kathy :-)

Hi Ralf,

I have not seen a Black Woodpecker before! His colors are beautiful.I love the red patch on his head and his wonderful eye. You captured him in a marvelous pose - the profile is terrific. Usually we see their beaks on trees. Razor sharp details and a nice setting.

Nick..

Hello Ralf,
Congratulations for this beautiful and not easy shot. It is very difficult to approach this woodpecker. The attitude and the management of light are excellent. Best regards,
Catherine
