[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today’s post is a reminder of the summer, I took this beautiful pair last August in Värmaland when we was on one weeks vacation,
It’s Black Darter, Sympetrum danae.
It’s a common dragonfly and it’s on wings from June-Sep.

The commonest darter species of acid/moorland habitats. The mature male is distinctively almost wholly black, except for some yellow on the sides of the thorax and near the base and tip of the abdomen. Immatures and females are predominantly a golden yellow with black on the sides. A dark triangle on top of the thorax is a useful diagnostic feature for the species. The males darken as they mature, concealing most of these markings. The legs are solid black, as in the Ruddy Darter, and the males have a ‘waisted’ abdomen

Sigma 180 Macro HSM EX , tripod, fill-in flash,
ISO 400, Raw-format,
Convert, Levels, Contrast, Crop, resized to 800 pixels, USM on the B/W channel in lab-colours. I used Adobe Photoshop CS2 for PP

Hi Gert.
What a crisp sharpness and great DOF. I am glad to see my favorite aperture value at execution of such Guru as you.

Captured scene is amazing as well as the clear colours, wonderful BG and perfect composition. My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.

HeJ gert,
This shot shows how useful a high aperture can be when you want a good depth of focus.
Every detail of these black darters in cop. is sharp.
Even so, you've managed a good neutral bg and arranged a good comp. Only the untidy position of the male's wings prevent this from being a top shot, and that was not your fault.
Well done and TFS,
Hälsningar, Ivan

Hi Gert

What an outstanding shot in every single way!
I remember reading Loot's critique on one of your latest post that stated: "the problem is that one start looking hyper critically at these photos to try and find a nit, just to be able to say, “Gotcha”. However, you are relentless and just won’t give us the pleasure of finding a nit, because like with this photo, it is perfectly perfect in all aspects."
It fits like a glove here, too!
Everything is excactly how it shoud be!
The sharpness is fantstic, keeping a great level of details down to the smallest of features.
The colors are most charming and imeccably saturated.
The POV is great and allows you to capture them in this lovely pose from a very good angle.
But...i have to say that my personal favorite element here is the DOF: it's simply breathtaking to see that you maanged to keep every tiny milimeter from any part of any of the two draonglies in full focus, while still blurring the BG beautifully.
Even the note is great!

What else can i say, my friend, than "Perfect work"!
BRAVO and TFS
Horia

Hi Gert,

An outstanding macro, well captured wit excellent colors, sharpness and details,I see some small dustspots (my experience is that when you close the aperture (fully) down and especially with a macro lens the spots are sooner visible, anyway a great shot and TFS

Paul

OUCH that's sharp!!
So much right with this and it just grabs your attention.
The POV being level with the dragonfly is very effective, the background is flawless. The colours are rich and lighting superb.
Really nice moment in nature,
Thanks for this Gert,
Simon

Hej Gert
This is cool shot of two guys connected in network :) Details and colours are really nice, well presented and framed too.

Hello Gert,
Children don't look they are in love ;-) Seriously, you made a superb shot !
The "+++" : subject, pose, composition, point of view, super sharpness & DOF, great blurred background, colors, exposure, useful complementary note...
The "-" : I can't find with you...
Congratulations my friend and TFS.

Hello Germ!
Nice and interesting picture even if there is a lot of different species of dragonflies on TN. It is not easy to keep good DOF it such situation so my congratulation! :)
Interesting is that this male is not black to much (as specimens in Poland).
Best greetings,
Radomir

Ricardo

Pleasant macro Gert mainly for the sharpness captured in both insects and the excellent contrast with the bottom due to their appropriate diffusion.
I like the captured point of view and framing.
Perhaps the USM processes has been something excessive.
My best regards... Ricardo

Hej Gert,
Excellent shot taken from a rather unusual and difficult angle which you have managed perfectly well, of course! All in focus and razor sharp! Very nice to see all clear details against the very fitting smooth background. Beautiful composiition.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

You do seem to be a master of these macro shots, Gert. It is just amazing. Perfect in all ways.

Hi Gert
a wonderful balancing act, not only by the intwined dragon flies, but also getting them in such wonderful sharpness. Excellent DOF, the details are perfectly sharp on both. What a wonderful composition, not distracting details and the lovely green BG works perfectly.
TFS..Sky

Hello Gert,
Excellent DOF with this one, and especially important for this type of shot..
Very good sharpness, detail, colors, and light mf.
Well seen against the "clean green" BG also :)
Well done!

Hello Gert,
you have presented these acrobats of love very elegantly composed and arranged, with fine details and subtle colours against a perfectly well fitting, vibrantly structured and coloured, distant background.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hi Gert

Rather late (again) than never.

Another excellent lesson in macro photography exquisitely showing us how to do it, or at least giving a perfect example of what the outcome should be looking like. The enlarged DOF attained by the small aperture at f/20 have brilliantly captured all those amazing details. The fill-in flash in combination with the 1/100 shutter speed ensured perfect exposure and spot-on lighting to bring out the splendid colours and contrasts, even on the darker areas on the insects. The composition is indicative of through the lens awareness of the subject and positioning while considering the aesthetics of lines, angles, and proportions. This also spilled over to the proper setting up of the shot to ensure a perfectly OOF and well removed BG. I am convinced this was not attained by fluke.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
