[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Pearly Heath (Coenonympha arcania) is fairly common in the Eastern half of Southern Sweden and as it is very rare in Scania we took the opportunity to photograph it on our trip north.

It flies as if hopping over the long grasses of its habitat, seldom visiting flowers, but often settling on a leaf or blade of grass to sun itself. Like many Satyrids, or Browns, it never opens its wings when settled.

There four species of this genus in Sweden, the Small Heath, here , taken by Ulla recently, being the most common.

In Europe and N. Africa there are 16 members of this Heath genus

Though absent in the UK, the Pearly Heath is widespread in most of Europe.

The larval host plants are various species of grass.

This shot was taken with the camera hand held at a distance of about two meters.

Hi Ivan,
I think this cousin of the C.pamphilus is more beautiful. The colours and patterns are more vivid. Nice sharply captured and displayed. The high contrast is a difficult thing. The white umbrella or screen is for me too much work, but I have seen the nice results of using this material instead of not. Maybe I should buy me a cheap white umbrella.
But your picture is fine anyway.
Regards, Jacob

Hello Ivan,
This Pearly Heath has very interesting and special patterns on its wings. I never saw it in Valais, may be there exists another related species like the Small Heath or another alpine variety. It must have been quite difficult to take this picture because of the contrast shadow/light.
Thank's and best regards
Anne

Hello Ivan,
a lovely composition, full of detail and wonderful colors.
The presentation is very nice, the neutral OOF BG does show off this beauty very well. Great DOF showing of this butterfly in perfect sharpness.
TFS..Sky

Hello Ivan,
pleasantly dim coloured, well detailed portrait of that pretty little species, well presented in front of dark distant background. The silvery stripes on hindwings are shown very well here. I suppose that slight cropping at the left might be worth trying to further increase the concentration of the image.
Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Hello Ivan,
When I look at a post, I ask myself, how could I have done it better? Not much wiggle room here, great capture.
I always resort to my tripod & say..at 1/800th, I would have have reduced the shutter-speed, and increased the DOF. But that's just me...Honest :) Well done.
Howard
