[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the female of this species, looking more like the Chequered Skipper. The male is less like the Chequered Skipper and is much more yellow and is shown in the WORKSHOP.

The Northern Chequered Skipper (Caterocephalus silvicola) occurs in C. and N. Sweden along the coast. Oddly enough the Chequered Skipper tends to be more northerly in Sweden. It flies from late may until the end of June, depending on local climate and in this locality was already a week late, as both these individuals are rather worn and I could not find any fresh specimens.

In Europe it is found in NE Germany, Poland, Finland and the Baltic states and across to Siberia. The larval host food plants are various species of grass.

The Wood Cranesbill flower has been eaten by some small insect, possibly a small Leaf Beetle, the holey flower petals making one think that the skipper’s wings look like they have black holes too.

This shot, as usual with my macros, was taken at a distance of about 2 meters with the camera hand held. The image was cropped by about 40% and after size reduction, sharpened.

Ivan very nice shot and valuation information. The image has lovely pov and nice details. Ganesh

Dear Ivan!
Very beauty composition! I like a lot contrast between Chequered Skipper and the violet flower.
Bravo also for showing in one presentation both sexes of this species.
By the way, I have a question, is the name Caterocephalus silvicolus a correct one? I know Caterocephalus silvicola but on the other hand I am not a specialist in Lepidotera :)
TFS and have a nice week!
Radomir

Well captured and nicely presented with the almost square crop! Good detail and colors! Bravo!

I just love this one, and I cannot really tell if I like the insect or the flower more.
Although the flower’s petals have seen better days, I can still notice a pretty and colourful display. Thanks for the interesting note, as well as the workshop. The male seems to be less dark in colour and the one can notice the difference immediately.
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the information.

Kind regards.
Aaltjie.

Ps. I hope the granddaughter is doing fine.

Great colors...Outstanding composition...Very informative note...TFS

Hi Ivan.
What a great POV despite (or owing) the long focal length of your optic system. I am impressed with quality of reproduction of the flower (all its details) and beautiful butterfly. DOF is great too as well as almost square cropping and perfect soft enough lighting.

Hi Ivan,

I'm not sure which is more beautiful - the butterfly or the violet flower. They are marvelous together. Fantastic colors and details against a lovely background.

WOW!!
What a marvellous shot, Ivan!!
I love the perfect texture and details, the natural colors and fantastic POV and composition with that excellent bg.
I wish I could make those macros from about 2 meters away. Gorgeous!
Congratulations and TFS

bonjour ivan
bien qu'un peu juste en profondeur de champ a mon humble avis ,la photo est assez reussi avec un bon POV et de belles couleurs naturelles.

I have seen the male in the workshop and there is quite a lot of difference between the two, Ivan.
It is great to find them with their wings wide open. Your image gives a perfect view of the special features of its wings.
The perofrated petals of Cranesbill flower also look interesting.
TFS and regards.

Hello Ivan,
this is a beautiful picture of the flower and of a skipper which I did not observe in nature up to now.
The petals of the flower show a a blue coloured margin. Interestingly, the margins of the feeding wholes share just the same colour. Obviously, the plant recognizes margins and reacts!
The great depth of field covers the whole blossom and most parts of the wings. I state (once again) that the colours are very natural. The background 'design' is optimal:
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan,

Great shot
sharpness, details, colours, POV, DOF and BG are Perfect
Nice to see the male (in your WS) looks totaly different than his female

Hello Ivan,
both Ulla and you keep on surprising me with the variety of objects in you photography. But not only this, also the fine quality of (sometimes) scarce or rare species. This is also a very nice species. Also the workshop image shows very well the variation in the form. Beside all compliments I can't help :o) to say that the focussing point of your camera was probably aimed at the flower. The butterfly itself lacks the ultimate sharpness. I don't know whether you set your camera to automatic. The shutterspeed 0f 1/1600 makes me wonder. Anyway, I think there is an obvious reason (for me it is mostly the quick timespan in which the picture has to be taken leaving no time to check the camera setting). Anyway....a fine picture!
Regards, Jacob

Hi Ivan,

Hello Ivan,
Beautiful colour-combination for your picture and a most interesting butterfly, I never have seen. The light on the flower is so beautiful and the background very fine. I don't mind a lack of sharpness on the right wing.
Best regards
Anne

Hi Ivan,
very clear and precise, well arranged, fresh looking, lively presentation of with both the skipper (that is new to me) and the geranium blossom.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter

Ivan,
You caught two flowers at the same time :))) What a nice picture with superb details, exposure and composition. I love the way the insect's wings are opened, like the flower's petals. This is beautiful with a nice bonus in WS :) Thanks,
Claudine
