Today's post is a Owl butterfly I took in Haga Butterfly Garden in Solna/Stockholm.
It's a big and beautiful butterfly. I don'r like the plastic flower, but they have "feeding station" hidden in the flower. It's a lot of naturel flower, but the butterflies perfer the plasic ones.

Some info about the Owl butterfly.
From Honduras, Caligo eurilochus is not only interesting because of its giant size and shimmering blue upper wing surfaces, the "owl eyes" on the undersides of the wings are its most striking feature.
Closely related to the Morpho butterflies of South America this very large attractive species is a true butterfly and not a moth. When disturbed, the butterfly exposes its "owl eyes" to the would be predator which are often small insect eating animals that are themselves preyed upon by owls and have a healthy respect for anything that resembles an owl.

Technique:
Sigma 180 maco EX HSM, Tripod. build-in flash for fill in.
ISO 200, Raw-format, One-shot autofocus, AV-mode
Convert, Levels, Contrast, Crop, resized to 800 pixels , USM on the B/W channel in lab-colours. I used Adobe Photoshop CS2 for PP

I hate to hear that insects behaviours are "genetical" and that the do not learn new things at all. Well I dont know how many generations where needed before this butterflies "learnt" that the plastic flowers were more nutritive than the natural ones.
A super shot, congratulations for this clarity.
Regards, Felipe.

Hi Gert,

Excellent shot and well done on the composition and details.
Some minor post pro defects in the background and around the antennae.
Remember, I'm studying to be a photoshop master. ;) :)

Superb shot of this beauty Gert! Amazing patterns on wings, clear and sharp. Hypnotic eyes. Plastic flower is really bad thing here, but beauty of butterfly let us forget about flower.

Hello Gert, that´s an excellent butterfly shot. Colourfull with excellent sharpness, very good details and great note too. Very good job. Thanks for posting.

Nice shot Gert!
The framing and lighting are very good, DOF and POV as well. I just find the noise in BG a bit distructing, but that's a minor nit.
WELL DONE & TFS

Great capture Gert,
Stunning detail, colour, sharpness and composition.
I'm not keen on the fake flower though :)
Well captured, thanks for posting.

Hi Gert !

Sharp and well exposed butterfly picture. As other said, the flower is the disturbing element here. But you probably didn't have any choice. It was this shot or no shot at all. And I would have done the same because it is really a beautiful insect.
Good work and TFS.

Hi Gert:

It was realy weird to see a butterfly settling on the plastic flower... LOL ...

NIce shot, great contrast and definition.

hugs
alejandro

Flower aside Gert, this is a beautiful butterfly, and you have managed to (almost) fill my screen with it.

The markings on this one very much remind me of an owl.

Well done and TFS.

Thank you very much brother Gert.
I would currently like to be in the luggage of Paul to be able to live with him his voyage in South Africa. I am not undoubtedly the only one to wish that.
