Today’s post is lovely coloured bug, a Six-spot burnet moth. It’s a very common insect up here and I think you can find it everywhere.
This one sitting on a thistle. They are beautiful in the metallic wings.
I hope you like it.

After that Peter mention this could be a Zygaena viciae, I have looked in my books and on internet and I'm sure Peter is right. They are rare up here and I'm very happy if this is correct.
Thanks Peter

Now I'm more confused, thanks to Göran;-)
He mention a moth that I never heard about, but I think he is right. It's looks more like a Zygaena lonicerae. And it's rare too.
Thanks Göran.

Why is it so hard to find out the right ID on insects, it's more easy to shot them.;-))

Hi Gert,
When comparing the Z. viciae and the Z. lonicerae with your picture I would suggest the latter to make things more confusing for you...:-). You probably have other shots from other angles to use as comparative material if necessary.
You can be proud of the Z. lonicerae too because they both are rare and faring badly (missgynnade) in Sweden.
Good luck and thanks a lot for this valuable and interesting contribution,
Goran

Hi Gert,
I don't know one from the other, but I do know when I see an excellent photograph. The vivid colors and metallic sheen are amazing. Very sharp detail with perfect DOF. Subject is well isolated from the perfect OOF backround. Your usual super high quality work! A joy to view!

I am off to Melbourne Australia soon - and it is much colder than Auckland, NZ!! Be back next weeek.

Good morning Gert,
Just time for a very quick visit.
Nice shot. Thanks for posting.
Have a great week.

Very good shot, Gert! Excellent sharpness, light and colours. A super high quality work!
Best regards

Hi Gert,

sharp and clear image of this burnet. I like the unrolling proboscis! Exciting iridescent colours in the sunlight.

By the way, counting the spots, the ID is not likely to be the Six-Spot "Zygaena filipendulae", but more likely one of the few (and certainly rarer) Five-Spot Burnets, probably:

Zygaena viciae (Denis & Schiffermüller 1775).

For a useful and complete picture documentation of European Zygaenidae, you may have a look into: www.leps.it
Another useful source may be: http://www.schmetterling-raupe.de/art/viciae.htm

Counting spots on burnets captured by friends seems to be one of my favorite hobbies. :)

With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

P.S.: Thank you for the workshop photo that may help to get closer to identification.

Z. lonicerae, that is called "Narrow bordered Burnet" by English common name, is very similar, indeed, as our TN friend Goran correctly suggested. Looking at both of your pictures, I still prefer to identify your finding as "Zygaena viciae", the "New Forest Burnet", for the following reasons:

1) The wings of your burnet do look quite transparent in your original image.
2) The black border on hindwings, as can be seen on your workshop posting, is by no means "narrow", so I would not vote for the "narrow bordered" alternative.

For very similar species as these, probability is the only thing we can state from images as shown here. And I would say, it is 50% to 50% of either one of these rare Five-Spotted ones.

Funny enough, your posting made me dig out a shot I took in the Vienna woods this year in June. I identified the burnet I captured as "Zygaena lonicerae" when loading it up to my files a few weeks ago. Now, having checked illustrated sites like C. Jonko's, I would tend to call my finding "Zygaena viciae" - due to the broad dark borders on hind wings. I think I will post this image in the next few days.

Identifiying burnets can be almost as exciting as capturing them. Thank you for capturing this one for us.
:) ps

Great picture of this moth.
Great position, color, DOF, sharpness and BG

Dear Gert,
To add top your confusion I think I have to point out that the flower most likely is [called] knapweed < Centaurea family >, rather than a thistle. Have a look in my gallery.

Hope this helps, Jay

Hej Gert,
