Map butterfly - Araschnia levana

This is an expanding species in Sweden and has become quite common in the very south. It is quite remarkable in that it has two annual broods which are very different in appearance. This early form, ‘levana’, flies from May-June and has pale orange tanned wings with black spots while the late form, ‘prorsa’, flies from August-September and is black with white spots and narrow red bands. I have posted an example of ‘prorsa’ in Workshop. The name comes from the pattern on the underside of the wings which looks rather like a map. See Workshop 2.

This butterfly has a wingspan of about 31-43 mm and belongs to the Nymphalidae family. It seems to visit a variety of damp habitats sheltered from the wind. It is common in central and eastern Europe. The larvae feed on stinging nettles.

Hello Ulla,
a brilliant and well-composed picture of our smallest Nymphalinae-species here in Europe. Focus and sharpness are just on the butterfly and the grass leaf it is resting on. All other parts of the picture are sufficiently blurred so that the main player attracts our whole attention. I always like the colours of your pictures because they are very natural throughout.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ulla,
Apart from the fact that this is brilliant capture of a Map Butterfly, I absolutely adore that very shapely long blade of grass on which you "nailed" the subject [to use Simon's favourite expression :-)].
Superb point of view, razor sharp focus on the entire subject, beautiful colours and an outstanding composition.
Very many thanks for sharing this masterpiece of a picture and best regards,
Ram

Truly beautiful! The BG is absolutely lovely in colour and dissolved in unsharpeness so that the butterfly gets enhanced in it's beauty.

I love the idea of using workshops this way and I learned something about this specie by your WS. How great!

Thanks for this/Bengt

Hi Ulla,

Great shot of the Map Buttefly, nicely composed shot with a great POV and pose, the detail is excellent and lovely colours, I like the way the Butterflt is isolated from the BG, the Workshops are great too showing us the underside of the Butterly and the one from later in the year.

Hi Ulla

Another beautiful macro shot from you!
Your POV here was really terrific and the pose of the butterfly was also superbly caught.
The details are great, too and the colors are well saturated.
The shots from the two workshops are great, too.
Very well done!

Good shot of this battle worn specimen.
The central composition works on this occasion. Great sharpness and OOF background (using f4 I see).

Hello Ulla,
Very nice shot of this wonderful butterfly! Good sharpness and beautiful colors, well seen and done.

Hello Ulla,
beautifully presented Araschnia levana, the blade of grass providing an elegant stage for the actress. Obviously a well established newcomer to your place. Here we do not see the orange coloured spring version that often, don't know why, while the black summer version seems to be around in much larger numbers later in the year.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter
