Today’s post is from my archive. It’s one of my fav’s, the emerald damselfly.
It’ a very common damselfly up here I-m waiting for them to show soon.
Widespread and common. Adults can be seen from mid June to late September. This can be a locally abundant species favoring acid ponds and small lakes, but avoiding very exposed and upland sites. It is the last species of damselfly to emerge each year in mid to late June.
The Emerald Damselfly is similar to the Scarce Emerald Damselfly Lestes dryas. Males of both species are emerald green and as they mature develop a powdery blue pruinescence on the thorax, abdominal segments 1 and 2 and on the apex of the abdomen. The pruinescence can sometimes obscure the spots on segment 2 which are teardrop-shaped in the Emerald Damselfly and rectangular in the Scarce Emerald. The inferior anal appendages are straight in the Emerald and broad and curved inwards in the Scarce Emerald.

Technique:
Sigma 180 Macro EX HSM. 1.4x converter, manual mode, ISO 200, Raw-format, Tripod.
Convert, Levels, Contrast, Cropped, resized to 800 pixels, Smart sharpen,.
I used Adobe Photoshop CS3 for PP and Noiseware Pro

The technical qualities of this photo are stunning. (I was happy with the dragonfly photo I took today until I saw this). Perfect focus with incredible details of entire damselfly. Perfect exposure with beautiful metallic colors and the chalky blue equally well exposed. Outstanding DOF and a very complimentary and pleasing background color. Even the thin black frame is perfect.

Wow Gert,

All I can say is that this is a salon picture. Excellent.

Hi Gert,
Superlative shot. Perfect light management and lovely colours. Amazing sharpness, it cannot come any better. Excellent POV to show its features in entirety and very precise DOF. The smooth BG works wonders here and presents a nice contrast. I like the horizontal and diagonal symmetry in this composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi, dear Gert.
Fantastic colour palette and smoothness of the BG. Great soft lighting and crisp sharpness of the amazing dragonfly. It is interesting but strong vertical stem which attracts the look does not destroy the image and impression. Perfect Canon-Sigma/Gert job and my best wishes.
Alexei.

Wow, I'm glad I found this! There are so many pictures coming in now so I get lost at times!
I love this dainty little damselfly too! This capture is really SUPERB!!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

PS Denna bild måste betyda att nu har ni också toppenväder så nu blir det väl full fart på dig. Jag ser fram emot det!!

A pretty attractive damselfly, Gert. The name "Emerald" fits the looks.
Sharp and colourful capture against a pleasant unifirm BG.

Hi Gert

I remember this one. You have another wonderful shot of this species that is well put aside among my favotires :)
I also like this speceis a lot - i find it charming and delicate - and i'm also waiting for them here too (still haven't spotted one this year).
The key tech word here is: impeccable!
I'm impressed by the way you managed to keep this beauty in such great focus but also to blurr the BG so nicely.
The colors are lovely and vibrant and the exposure is spot-on.
A wonderful composition!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Gert!

So fragile and beautifull! Excellent composition and details, colours, sharpness, DOF... I like blurred spot of violet on right side. It's not disturbing at all.

Hi Gert
C'est une très belle et intéressante composition macro-photographique bien réalisée pour cette superbe demoiselle. Jolies couleurs et bonne netteté.

Dear Gert,
I have to add my compliments to the long list of compliments. It is sooo beautiful this Damselfly that you photographed, it makes me think about all the things you had to do right in order to come up with such a perfect pic; I will try harder myself next time.
Thanks for showing, thanks for explaining.
My best regards
Dietrich
