Today’s post is a picture of one of the most common shield bugs, The Sloe bug, (Vanlig Bärfis), Dolycoris baccarum)
We all know how a berry taste when this one has marked it with its liquid but they are beautiful both in shape and colours. I found this one when it was leaving from an ox-eye daisy.

Length 12mm
Dark reddish brown and stippled with black dots; segments of abdomen banded reddish yellow and black and these visible beyond outer margin of wings. Pronotum lacks pronounced lateral projections seen in some other shield bugs. Widespread and common in Britain and Ireland although scarce in N. Associated with blackthorn and other hedgerow shrubs and feeds on sloe and other berries.

Tamron 90 mm macro DI,
ISO 200, RAW-format, AV-mode. 1.4X converter, Tripod
Levels, Contrast, Crop, S/H-filter. resized to 800 pixels, Smart Sharpen PP in PS CS3

Hi Gert,

Thank you for the great notes because this insect is new to me. Excellent colors and details. I love the flower it has settled on. They both look wonderful against the superb background.

Hi,
Amazing picture, the details are amazing and again the exposure is spot on. The colors and the POV are excellent. The position of the subject, just off center here gives a punch to the picture

Hi Gert

A lovely macro. I really like the hard angles of the insect which contrast well with the softer lines of the flower. The focus and colour are great too.

Hi Gert,
Yesterday, I took some pictures of this very same bug..., no so close-up, my equipment doesn't allow so, but I'll upload one, to see if there are differences between sweddish and catalan sloe bugs...;-) Regards, Marta
