Now the birds arrive one by one, Starling, Whooper swan, Black-headed Gull and now Chaffinc. And more will come.
It’s a very welcome and popular bird here in Sweden. It has a nice song.
It’s very common in the middle and south part of Sweden, you can not find it in the northern part. This one was the dominate male and he had a big job to chase the other males.

The male Chaffinch is distinctively coloured, especially in spring when the dull outer edges of his feathers wear away to reveal the striking blue head and pink breast. In all plumages though, Chaffinches are easily told by their unique combination of two broad white wing bars and obvious white outer tail feathers.
Breeds in woodlands, parks, gardens and hedgerows. Winters in gardens and farmland, especially stubble fields.
An abundant and widespread, bird throughout Britain, except parts of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Most common in woodland areas. The race F.c.africana has occurred as an extremely rare vagrant.
One of Europe's commonest birds.
5 400 000 territories have been estimated for Britain where they are widespread, while a further 2 100 000 can be found in Ireland. Continental visitors in winter bring the total up as many as 30 000 000 birds.
80-96 million breeding pairs. Ubiquitous throughout Europe apart from some areas of Arctic Scandinavia.

Technique:
Sigma 100-300 /4 EX HSM, Fill-In flash.
ISO 200, flash -2/3 ev ,Raw-format, One-shot Autofocus,
Converted, Levels/Curves, Contrast, Crop, resized to 800 pixels , USM , converted to sRGB save as JPG for the WEB. I used Adobe Photoshop CS for PP

Excellent capture of this Chaffinch singing his heart out. Colours are spot on, very good dof to show all the details in his beautiful plumage and the composition with the diagonal twig is perfect. - Pity there is no sound as they have such a beautiful song.

Now I'm definately not going to post my best shot of a chaffinch! This is a great shot, I love it and wish I could get something nearly as good. The background is lovely, the bird is sharp and catching him singing away is very evocative of springtime. I love it. Is it the fill-in flash that does the trick for toning down the contrast between sky and bird? Btw, great notes too. Thanks Gert for posting it for us.
