Today’s post is a very common butterfly up here and in Europe.
This brimstone must be of the second generation because it was so fresh.
It’s quite large, wing span 55-60mm and the first generation is one of the earliest
Butterflies in the spring, on wings already in March. The second generation are
On wings from late July. August, the Brimstone wintering as an adult.
The flower is what I think a gråfibbla, Mouse-ear Hawkweed (Pilosella officinarum).
I took this picture with the ”beer can” at 210mm and a 25mm extension tub.

Found in Europe, Asia, and even north Africa, it is one of the longest lived butterflies, living up to thirteen months, although most of this time is spent in hibernation.
On the upper side the male is sulphur yellow and the female white with a greenish tinge but both have an orange spot in the center of each wing. They never settle with their wings open and from the underside the sexes are more difficult to separate but the female are still paler. Their wing shape is unique among British butterflies (although there are similar, closely related species in southern and eastern Europe) and is designed to act as camouflage while they rest and during hibernation. widely distributed across the southern half of the UK, it has been steadily increasing its range in the north of England but is limited by the distribution of its larval food plants and is quite possibly close to its maximum possible distribution now unless their food plants' range also increases. In Ireland it has a much more localized distribution. It is widespread across Europe, North Africa and eastwards to Mongolia Often the first butterfly to be seen in the spring, sometimes as early as January when hibernating adults are awoken on a sunny day, there is a popular myth that it is this butterfly which gave us the word BUTTERFLY, a corruption of butter-colored fly.

Hello Gert,
You really did catch a fresh one! Outstanding detail and rich, well saturated colors. I like when you can see the ridges caused by the veins in the wings (much like a leaf). I like your POV and composition also. It also looks 3-D and I am suprised how good the DOF is with aperture of f14.0. I am gussing that is because of extension tube? You have a great weekend also!

Thanks Gert,
Hopefully they can do something about it and I do wish you all the strenght you need.
Although a very common buttefly it's a very nice one.
We call this a "Citroenvlinder" wich in English does mean "Lemon Butterfly" becouse of it's color.
Wonderful lighting and clarity due to wich the details are beautifully visible.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a nice weekend,
Harry

Hi Gert

A lovely Mouse-ear Hawkweed you say that plays host to this impressive Brimstone butterfly while it is evident from the insects imbedded proboscis that it's busy sucking the weed dry. Ah, but the flower knows that it's a case of give and take. Give a bit of nectar and receive a bit of pollen in exchange. The way of nature – nothing lives as and island and every species is always interconnected to the existence of another species.

As usual we see a flawless composition from you, with all the technical aspects firmly in place. Beautiful well saturated colours complimented by excellent and fine details on the subject, amazing exposure levels to bring out the superb contrasts, and a wonderful BG to enhance the insect and to show it off in the best possible way.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Gert,
In your note does not appear the scientific name of the butterfly, if she interests his name to you is… (gonepteryx rhamni).
Greetings,
Joan

Hej Gert,
This fine shot of a male Brimstone couldn't be sharper. the details, colour and POV are excellent, as ithe composition with the Hawksbit flower.
These hawksbits are difficult to ID. I thought that the Mouse-eared (gråfibbla)has paler flowers but I'm no botanist.
TFS,
Bästa hälsningar,

Hi Gert,
this is a very nice shot from the Brimstone. Great POV, sharpness and details. Great exposure and colours too. This is great composition. Thank you.

Brimstones must be having a good time at this time of the year in Sweden, Gert, because I looked at another good picture of this species by Ulla the other day.
Your shot of this butterfly is as perfect as the rest of your outstanding work.
Thanks for sharing and regards.
