The Red Admiral is a beautiful butterfly but this one is maybe not in the best shape.I found it on an almost dead flower where it was resting after a cold and wet night. As soon the sun start to shine it open up the wings to get warm. Unfortunately the Red Admiral will not survive the Swedish winter.
But some experts have another opinion and mean some of the Red Admirals can wintering as an adult as we can see it early in the spring, I don’t know, maybe Ivan can clear this out, it would be very interesting to know.
I hope you like it anyway

The Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. This large butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red and black wing pattern. The caterpillars feed on nettles, the adults drink from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.
In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the pale fire of ivy flowers on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging subjects showing prominently darker colourings than first brood subjects. The butterfly also flies in sunny winter days, especially in southern Europe.

Hej Gert,
This looks like a beautiful piece of art against the dark background. This poor Admiral seems to have got battered by the heavy rains but its colours are still wonderful and you're showing the details very sharply as usual. The withering plant fits very well - a goodbye to summer!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hej Gert
Ralf

Nice colorful butterfly on an interesting perch against an excellent BG. Well done!

Hej Gert,
If a damaged Red Admiral were to be portrayed to look at at its best, this would be an excellent example of such a shot. The technical quality is superb and the composition and backgroung are just right, all the lighting and colour coming from the butterfly.
My compliments and TFS!
Hälsningar,
Ivan

Nice and sharp, crisp clear colours too Gert. His wing looks a bit tatty, what a shame. Great capture,

Ever since I joined the website two of your attributes I always tried to get right... One is your macro work and the other your in-flights. :) I still to this day try to get a decent duck in-flight to send you a copy. But alas our ducks are very wild and its not easy to approach.

I trust all is well mf, and happy to see you back in the Canon stable. :)

Hi great foto
very good colours well focused
and nice composition
