Red Admiral - Vanessa atalanta

A butterfly seen many times before on TN. While other butterflies seem to have declined in numbers this year, the Red Admiral has been quite common here. The flower is Hemp Agrimony. This shot was taken in our garden with the camera handheld from a distance of ½ metre. It has been cropped, sharpened and reduced in size for TN. I’ve adjusted the levels slightly and applied NeatImage to the background.

“This colourful butterfly is found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.
This large butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red and black wing pattern. The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.

In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the pale fire of ivy flowers on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging individuals showing prominently darker colourings than first brood subjects. The butterfly also flies on sunny winter days, especially in southern Europe.
In North America, the Red Admiral generally has two broods from March through October. Most of North America must be recolonized each spring by southern migrants, but this species over-winters in South Texas.” From Wikipedia

Casi diría que una foto perfecta. Colores reales quizá algo acentuados y un fondo ideal para el contraste. Excelente su aparato bucal en plena acción apreciándose el movimiento !!
Oportuna la flor y buen encuadre.
Saludos Ulla.

Hello Ulla,
The markings on these butterflies' wings are fascinating to me.
I have never seen a red admiral in real life, but each time I see a photo on TN, I am always amazed at those beautiful colors.
A beautiful capture with excellent sharpness and exposure.
The composition is lovely, with the subject nicely isolated against the OOF BG.

Hi Ulla
I've been having a terrible time with my internet connection, hopefully now all solved.
Excellent closed wings shot here, can't recall seeing this view on TN before.
Excellent sharpness and pattern details, that G7 is a nice camera.
Well compsoed on the flower, its so hard to get butterflies here on flowers but I will post a couple soon.

Hello Ulla,
I always think that Admirals have a very funny snout. Also this side view in your picture shows this. A very fine colour palette you depict here with nice contrast and details. I don't know about the bottom part of the flower, but would it have been nice to show that as well?
Greets, Jacob

A great capture - wonderful sharpness and details. There is a motion blur on the proboscis which is fascinating! You caught it in the act of unfurling, I think!
